This unit addresses contemporary issues in child and youth health, to provide the basis for further study in this field. A Primary Health Care framework will be used to consider issues that impact on the health of children and young people. In addition key policy frameworks will provide direction for study in the unit. The unit will consider the impact of social determinants on child, youth and family health and examine current strategies to address such impacts. Students will have the opportunity to examine local programs and strategies aimed at improving health outcomes.

Rationale

Health service delivery for children is undergoing rapid change, & the nature & scope of nursing practice within paediatrics, child & youth health is expanding. Nurses require a sound understanding of key issues impacting on the health of children & families in order to plan, implement & evaluate health care interventions within a rapidly changing specialist field. Contemporary issues are addressed to provide the basis for further study in this field. A Primary Health Care framework will be used to consider issues that impact on the health of children & young people. In addition key policy frameworks will provide direction for study in the unit. The unit will consider the impact of social determinants on child, youth & family health & examine current strategies to address such impacts. Students will have the opportunity to examine local programs & strategies aimed at improving health outcomes.

Aims

The aim of this unit is for the student to develop knowledge of health promotion practices within a primary health care context, as much of adult ill health has its origin in individual's experiences of childhood and is influenced by health behaviours established in this time.

Objectives

This unit will enable students to:


  1. Identify & discuss key policy frameworks for child & youth health in Australia;


  2. Discuss the impact of social determinants on health;


  3. Discuss key issues that impact on child youth & family health in contemporary Australian society;


  4. Interpret epidemiological data relevant to child & youth health;


  5. Discuss the role of family in the health of children & young people;


  6. Identify strategies designed to address contemporary health issues;


  7. Examine specific local programs aimed at improving health outcomes; and


  8. Discuss the role of nursing in improving health outcomes for children & young people.

Content

Content for this course is organised in interrelated modules which address the key issues in paediatrics, child & youth health nursing, epidemiology, social determinants of health and primary health care; contemporary health issues and policy responses; family functioning and family assessment, health promotion strategies and programs; nursing's role in promoting child and youth health.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Various approaches are adopted to encourage a broad understanding of issues in the area of child & youth health and may include tutorials, online discussion groups and teleconferences. Students will receive a comprehensive study guide & book of readings. The study guide will provide a framework for student readings & encourage critical analysis through a program of learning activities.

Description: The content of this assessment is drawn from selected activities in the unit modules. A structured approach to assessment & marking will be applied to provide students with detailed feedback on their progress. 2000 words.

Assessment name: Essay
Description: A structured set of directions will be provided. Using these students will analyse an existing health problem affecting a selected group of the child and young people population and then identify and discuss individual and service level strategies aimed at improving this health problem. A structured approach to assessment & marking will be applied to provide students with detailed feedback on their progress. 3000 words.
