This advanced unit identifies the repertoire of practice skills that health promotion students need to address health problems. It integrates needs identification, systematic planning and evaluation models into practice. Internal students put this knowledge into practice through participation in a group based health promotion project. The process of developing and implementing a health promotion program develops an understanding of issues such as ethics, writing goals and objectives, resources and time management. External students conduct a needs assessment and use the data to write a health promotion program proposal.

Note: Subject outlines often change before the semester begins. Below is a sample outline.

Rationale

A large proportion of health promotion work involves developing health promotion programs for specific health issues and target groups. This unit allows you to put this prior learning into practice and to develop skills that are essential for a health promotion practitioner.

Aims

You will work to develop a small health promotion program proposal. As you proceed through the various stages of your project you will be drawing on the knowledge and skills you have gained from previous units as well as the texts and other readings. You will be guided by two pieces of assessment.

Objectives

At the completion of this unit you will be able to:
1. interpret and apply a specific planning model in a given setting
2. critically analyse the health concerns of a specific community, demonstrating comprehensive knowledge of factors maintaining and reinforcing the current health status
3. develop and apply appropriate written objectives at each level of program development
4. develop and implement appropriate strategies for a specific health promotion program
5. demonstrate an understanding of the administrative and resource requirements to effect implementation of a program

Content

You will review information from previous units concerning planning, development, implementation, and management of health promotion programs. You will be provided with details of the levels of competency for these areas required for successful completion of the unit. You will also be required to engage in self directed learning with the help of the resources provided.
You will also be required to identify a health promotion issue with which you can develop a program. You will progress through the stages of program planning outlined under the supervision of the unit coordinator.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

The unit will be delivered in both internal and external modes. This subject is designed to be a culmination of your previous studies in health promotion and provide you with the opportunity to put your earlier learning into practice. The course will include lectures and tutorial activities.

An on-line teaching page will be established for this unit. Online real-time tutorials will be available for all students through this page. The page will also be used to post pre-recorded lectures, tutorial recordings, and other course materials for you to access. Both internal and external students will receive unit materials from this Blackboard page.

Assessment

There are two assessments. Students will be required to submit their assignments via SafeAssign and Assignment Minder by the due date.Assessment will be spaced to provide the opportunity for feedback on your learning to that point. You will be provided with feedback on all your assessments as you progress through the unit.
