Rationale
The unit examines the complexity of generating change within individuals, groups, communities and organisations to improve the public's health. Thus, it is an important area of study for health professionals.
Aims
The aim of the unit is for students to achieve a solid knowledge, critical understanding and application of theories of change and their application in health promotion interventions.
Objectives
On completion of this unit students should be able to:
- Critically analyse the elements of best practice in health promotion interventions from contemporary international and national case studies;
- Interpret the underpinnings and central features of key theories of behaviour change, community change and organisational change;
- Analyse and apply the appropriate and effective application of key theories of change and strategies to specific health promotion interventions.
Content
- Students in this unit will be introduced to the theories and strategies of health promotion nationally and internationally, and their applications across a wide range of interventions in diverse settings and environments. Numerous change theories underpin the selection of strategies in the design of a health promotion intervention, so understanding of theories of behaviour change, community change and organisational change and analysis of the appropriate and their effective application is essential for health promotion. To this end, case studies will be used to illustrate the real world application of key change theories. This unit builds on studies of new developments in health promotion in the unit PUP038.
