Rationale
In the challenging environment of the contemporary health system, managers will be required to provide organisational leadership to ensure that services continue to evolve to meet the changing community needs and the changing service delivery challenges. Such leadership requires the acquisition of knowledge and the development of competencies in leadership which may enable the future manager to address the current and future challenges. This unit will provide you with the knowledge and competencies to enable you to cope with the complex and changing environment of health care delivery.
Aims
The aim of the unit is to develop an in-depth understanding of the strategic issues confronting health, to develop an understanding of the strategic approaches required to address those issues and to develop strategic management competencies.
Objectives
At the completion, you should be able to:
- Understand the principles and concepts of organisational governance and the systems and structures required to exact governance.
- Understand and apply the principles and concepts of quality management and continuous quality improvement.
- Demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate organisational performance and report.
- Demonstrate the ability to manage media and communications both internally and externally.
- Apply the principles and practice of policy development, planning and evaluation.
- Understand and demonstrate personal attributes and leadership skills and the ability to engage staff and the community and to lead strategic negotiations.
- Demonstrate an in depth understanding of the relevance of Indigenous and International Health Issues to health management.

The unit will address the issues of importance in the strategic leadership and management of health organisations. It will include:

Approaches to Teaching and Learning
The unit will be delivered in a variety of modes including internal, external and in block delivery format.
Readings will be provided which provide a broad and diverse analysis of the current strategic issues. You will be provided with links to strategic documents and to relevant texts which may contribute to the growth in your knowledge and understanding.
Lectures, tutorials and case studies will be provided in a format including by electronic means which enables you to discuss and debate the issues under the leadership of high level tutors.
Workshops will expose you to high level leaders within health to challenge your techniques and philosophy and to identify styles and characteristics. In particular you will be provided with media training in a dedicated workshop.
Assessment
There are two assessments to be completed by the end of the semester.This will take place through feedback from tutors and peers.
Assessment will be spaced throughout the semester to provide the opportunity for feedback on your learning to that point. You will be provided with feedback on all your assessments as you progress through the unit.
There will be one report, and one take home examination which together form the assessment of this unit.
