Rationale
This unit provides you with advanced knowledge of leadership theories and frameworks critical for an effective quality and safety culture in health care organisations. This is one of four units offered as part of the Quality and Patient Safety major. It is designed to follow on from PUN213 which is a general introductory unit.
Aims
The aim of this unit is to develop appropriate knowledge and skills to lead the implementation of effective quality and patient safety programs within a health care setting.
Objectives
On completion of this unit it is expected that you will:
1 apply knowledge of the international, national and local health care leadership models and quality and safety frameworks
2 critically analyse leadership of clinical governance, and policy, culture, innovation, reform and performance management related to quality and patient safety in the provision of local and international health care services
3 deconstruct the social, ethical and cultural relationships relevant to quality and safety leadership in the health care setting.
Content
This unit will cover four areas:
Clinical Governance:
- leaders role in clinical governance
- clinical management and relationships
- clinical engagement
- accountability
- education
- evidence based practice
- clinical practice improvement
- research.
Policy:
- international health care quality policy agenda
- Australian policy context
- legislation related to health care quality and safety.
Culture, innovation and reform:
- role modelling
- belief in the process
- ethics, moral responsibility
- just/blame free culture
- findings of inquiries related to culture and reform
- developing a quality culture.
Performance Management:
- engagement in managing performance
- developing a performance culture
- individual performance- expectations, accountabilities, performance management.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
This unit will be available in internal and external mode of delivery with one intensive block. You will be provided the opportunity to learn through these activities and resources:
- A 4 day intensive block offers a rich opportunity to share, problem solve and learn with public and private sector health executives and senior managers (as guest presenters), through an interactive workshop format analysing real world practices.
- Contemporary readings and journal articles, a detailed study guide, tutorials, and audio recordings of industry guest speakers, will be available on your unit's Blackboard teaching site.
Assessment
General Assessment Information
There are three assessments to be completed throughout the semester - a quiz, a case study and a report.Assessment will be spaced throughout the semester commencing with the quiz in Week 5 which will provide you with a formative indication of your grasp of the knowledge of the unit before attempting the second assessment. It is expected you will use the readings and source further resources to extend your research skills and your knowledge of contemporary practices to inform your assessments. You will be provided with feedback on your report through the submission of a draft outline of the proposed quality and patient safety issue that forms the basis of the report before commencing the activity.
