This unit is undertaken by students in the public health, and nutrition and dietetics strands of the BHlthSc. It provides students with the opportunity of working in one or a number of placements in a professional capacity in an area of interest to the student. It provides an opportunity for students to apply the knowledge and skills acquired through their course to a practical problem or workplace situation. [Designated unit]

Rationale

This practice unit is the culmination of several years of study in the area of health sciences and forms an essential part of your preparation for professional practice. It is designed to enable you to integrate public health theory with practice in addition to enhancing your skills for employability.

Note: This is a designated unit. Designated units are units which are deemed to be critical in a student's progress in the course. Such units include professional experience units, units requiring the development of particular skills and units requiring the demonstration of certain personal qualities. At the end of each year students who have failed to achieve a satisfactory level of performance in a designated unit will be eligible for exclusion. A satisfactory level of performance in a designated unit is a grade of 4 (pass) or higher, or S - Satisfactory, where appropriate. Supplementary Assessment will NOT be granted to students enrolled in designated units.

Aims

The aim of this unit is to integrate and synthesise the knowledge and skills developed throughout your course. This is achieved by providing a relevant workplace-based project experience to further enhance your skills in readiness for professional practice.

Objectives

Throughout all aspects of this unit you are expected to demonstrate as appropriate sensitivity to and an understanding of cultural and gender-related issues. On completion of this unit, you should be able to:
1. Identify and apply legal and ethical frameworks to professional practice in the workplace and community.
2. Synthesise and apply knowledge, skills and experience acquired throughout the course to a workplace-based project.
3. Effectively solve management and public health problems in health care settings through critical, creative and/or analytical thinking.
4. Demonstrate self awareness of interpersonal and professional skills to achieve readiness for professional practice.
5. Develop a network of professional contacts in the area of public health, health services management, and/ or health information management to support future career planning.

Content

You are required to work in pairs (except for projects requiring only one student) to undertake an industry project which extends over the entire semester. This professional placement requires you to be on placement full-time for 2 weeks prior to Week 1 of the semester, full-time for 1 week during the semester break, and a minimum of 1 day per week during other weeks of the semester (or equivalent time equalling a minimum of 185 hours). An Orientation workshop will be held in the semester before your placement. There will be scheduled class meeting times throughout the semester.

This unit focuses on:
* The integration and application of Project Management theory (previously covered in PUB514 Contract/Project Management);
* The integration and application of contract and public health principles;
* The development, integration and application of skills related to Project Management, and;
* The development and enhancement of interpersonal and professional skills for employability.

This unit addresses the following Graduate Capabilities:
* Knowledge and skills pertinent to a particular discipline or professional area;
* Critical, creative and analytical thinking, and effective problem-solving;
* Effective communication in a variety of contexts and modes;
* The ability to work independently and collaboratively;
* Social and ethical responsibility and an understanding of indigenous and international perspectives, and;

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

The unit is available for internal study. It is designed to enable you to integrate the knowledge and skills achieved throughout your course with practice. You will undertake an industry based project facilitated by a sponsor at one of a variety of establishments such as government, non-government, community, commercial or human services sector organisations. Your preference for a placement location will be considered in placing you, although we cannot guarantee that we will be able to place you in your preferred location. This placement is 185 hours minimum. It begins 2 weeks prior to the start of the semester. You are responsible for carrying out the project in a suitable manner and are expected to be self-directed in terms of setting goals and timelines. You will have the ability to reflect upon your practice and report upon your activities and learning through reports; self, peer and sponsor reviews; presentations and class discussions and the completion of appropriate Career Development Modules. Teaching methods include discussions, seminars and self-directed learning.

Requirements for Project Placement: You must hold a Blue Card to undertake any unit which involves possible contact with children, including any required clinical studies. Allow 12 weeks for the Commission to issue the card, and ensure you hold the Blue Card 5 weeks before Week 0 of the semester of placement. You are required to undergo Hepatitis B vaccination. Hepatitis B vaccinations (3 inoculations) are done over a period of 6 months. This means that you need to prepare for your placements well in advance. A criminal history check may also be required to enable you to work in some locations. You are also required to complete the QUT School of Public Health Student Health Assessment Form/Declaration prior to undertaking any clinical placement. It is a Queensland Health requirement that all students complete an orientation package before undertaking any placement which involves Queensland Health.

Assessment

Students must successfully complete 185 hours of placement and the three pieces of assessment to achieve a passing grade.The Unit coordinator will be available in person at scheduled class meeting times or via email and the Blackboard page for this unit to answer questions and provide feedback. Assessment will be spaced throughout the semester to provide the opportunity for feedback on your learning at key points. You will be provided with feedback on each assessment item as you progress through the unit.
Students should review the information, participate in relevant discussions and complete the activities related to the development and enhancement of personal and professional skills as detailed on the Blackboard page for this unit. Personal development and reflection are supported to achieve satisfactory feedback from the Sponsor. Sponsor feedback must be sought and documented on a regular basis throughout the placement.
Overall grade for this unit will be Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory.

Assessment name: Presentation and Peer Review
Description: You will be required to present a brief plan for completing your Placement Project to your peers and undergo peer critical judgement. You will also Peer Review other students' project placement plans.

Assessment name: Presentation and Report
Description: You will be required to complete a written report of your project activities and findings, including reflections about your Placement. You will also be required to give an oral presentation of your project activities, findings, and reflections to your peers.
