Rationale

Success internationally requires the implementation of business strategy and government policies that is relevant to the dynamic global environment.

Aims

The aim of this unit is to focus on the implementation of corporate strategy and policy for global success. As the capstone unit in the International Business major, it is designed to build upon the knowledge base of previous units, introducing you to the strategic management of firms, and engage you in the strategic choices which international managers face in the international environment.

Objectives

Course Learning Goals (Undergraduate)

Unit Objectives
On the successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

1. Apply the concepts of international business strategy to the functional challenges that managers face in the global business area.
2. Evaluate the strategic options and choices available to companies in their international activities.
3. Appraise the environmental conditions and performance of a particular industry in designated countries, identify the prospect for business
entering this industry and the strategies necessary for a successful international entry strategy.

Content

This unit covers theories of investment and internationalisation and the foundations of international strategy, the institutional context of multinational management, basic strategies for the multinational company, international strategic alliances, internationalisation and entrepreneurship, and the management of corporate social responsibility.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Businesses value 'real world' focused authentic assessment items and experiential learning with an international focus. The assessment items proposed for AMB369 meets these requirements.

Students will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester which may include:


  • Informal: worked examples, such as verbal feedback in class, personal consultation

  • Formal: in writing, such as checklists (e.g. criteria sheets), written commentary

  • Direct: to individual students, either in written form or in consultation

  • Indirect: to the whole class

    Assessment name: Industry Analysis
    Description: Description:Industry Analysis. Individually you will prepare a presentation and report. You will outline its importance to the designated countries' economies, examine factors of operations and performance and assess the impact of recent issues on entry to the industry and future prospects then formulate an entry strategy.
    Length or Duration: Presentation 10-15 minutes (No more than 15 slides) and report 2500 words.
    Formative or Summative: Formative and Summative
    Weighting: 50% for report and 10% for presentation
    Due Date: Presentation Weeks 8-11, Report Week 12
