Provides the student with experience of professional practice in a suitable company where they actively work on a part-time basis. Students undertake a preferred study program within the Advertising, Marketing or Public Relations framework. Students are required to submit a number of reports reflecting the theoretical concepts acquired during the degree program, and how they might be applied in practice. Students must obtain the approval of the Major Coordinator prior to enrolling in this unit.

Rationale

The Internship unit provides a work integrated learning environment for students in the later stages of their course to build on their knowledge and skills in a 'real world' setting.

Aims

The Internship unit aims to provide students with the opportunity to apply and practise knowledge and skills developed through their studies in a business setting with supervision and feedback from industry and academic supervisors.

Objectives

Course Learning Goals (Undergraduate)
The QUT Business School has established the Assurance of Learning (AOL) Goals to meet contemporary industry needs and standards. Achieving these learning outcomes will assist you to meet the desired graduate outcomes set at QUT - aligned with other internationally renowned business schools. Students will develop the following capabilities relevant to a contemporary global and sustainable business environment:

Unit Objectives
At the completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. apply business principles, knowledge and skills in a 'real world' environment or project;
2. reflect on their own strengths and weaknesses and how these contribute to their professional practice;
3. develop a professional job application, including responses to selection criteria
4. prepare a professional presentation as a digital story

  • Approaches to Teaching and Learning

    Experiential learning in workplace settings and reflective practice are key approaches to teaching and learning in the unit. Students will be prepared for and supported during their internship placements through three face-to-face three-hour workshop sessions during the semester, and using online resources, discussion and activities on the unit Blackboard site.

    General Assessment Information
    Note: To successfully complete AMB310 Internship, each student must complete a minimum of 120 hours of work placement during the semester of enrolment. Students in the Corporate Partners of Excellence (CPIE) program should complete the placement requirements detailed in their scholarship agreement. Hours of placement will be verified by workplace supervisor at the end of the semester. Feedback from a workplace supervisor indicating a student's performance, application or attitude during the internship placement was unsatisfactory, may be considered in determining a student's final grade.Students will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester which may include:

  • Informal: worked examples, such as verbal feedback in class, personal consultation

  • Formal: in writing, such as checklists (e.g. criteria sheets), written commentary

  • Direct: to individual students, either in written form or in consultation

  • Indirect: to the whole class


  • Students will receive feedback on the assessment items and learning activities in the unit through written comments on criteria sheets, comments in response to online reflective blog posting, through verbal feedback in workshops. In addition, workplace supervisors will provide students with ongoing feedback throughout their placement and on completion of their placement.     Description: The professional plan is a learning contract between the student, the industry supervisor, and the academic supervisor.

    Description: In response to a supplied position description, each student will prepare a report in the form of a complete application for the position.

    Risk assessment statement

    Students are required to complete the work integrated learning risk assessment audit before commencing their project placement. Industry partners are provided with information and requirements to meet obligations and requirements in risk management
