This unit follows on from AMB033. Students further develop their knowledge and skills needed to understand, speak, read and write Mandarin Chinese in a wide range of everyday situations and to give presentations on given topics. Resources include textbook, workbook, CDs, DVDs and online multimedia materials. Students learn about 400 Chinese characters and have further exposure to various aspects of Chinese society and culture.

Rationale

This unit follows on from Mandarin 3. It will continue to meet student need to expand their working knowledge of Mandarin Chinese and to further their skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in the language. It will continue engaging students in activities to consolidate their knowledge and command of the Mandarin Pinyin/Romanization system and in activities to increase their competence in reading and writing Chinese characters as well as in speaking and understanding conversations and simple speech in everyday situations . With acquisition of the Chinese language, students will be further exposed to aspects of Chinese culture.

Aims

The aim of this unit is to provide students with further knowledge and skills in carrying out basic communicative tasks in a wide range of everyday situations where Mandarin is used.

Objectives

Unit Objectives
Upon completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate a better command of the Mandarin pronunciation, tones, and Pinyin Romanization system
2. Emphasise different aspects of past experiences, using 'shi . . . de' construction
3. Describe actions of motion in various directions, using directional complements
4. Depict passive-voice actions in overt or notional passive sentences
5. Inform others of impending actions
6. Present actions in inchoative, perfective or progressive aspects
7. Read and write about 400 additional Chinese characters introduced in the unit
8. Demonstrate a better understanding of Chinese society and culture

Content

Topics to be covered:
1. Use of aspect particle 'guo' and frequency expressions to talk about past experiences
2. Use of 'shi . . . de' construction to emphasise different aspects of past actions
3. Use of directional complements to describe actions of motion
4. Use of correct sentence patterns to depict actions in passive voice
5. Use of aspect and modal particles to depict actions in inchoative, perfective or progressive aspect
6. Use of correct sentence patterns to indicate impending actions
7. About 400 new Chinese characters
8. Further exposure to aspects of Chinese culture

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

There will be two 2-hour sessions each week for both lecture and tutorial activities. An eclectic approach will be employed in the delivery of the unit contents. Communicative skills will be developed through a task-oriented, activity-based approach. Students will be expected to actively participate in classroom activities and do set homework outside class on a weekly basis.

Students will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester which may include:

  • Informal: worked examples, such as verbal feedback in class, personal consultation

  • Formal: in writing, such as checklists (e.g. criteria sheets), written commentary

  • Direct: to individual students, either in written form or in consultation
