Rationale
This unit is provided to enable students to undertake an independent study based in their places of work. The course is designed for professional and specialist training and the opportunity to apply learning in the workplace. Individual supervision and objective feedback on the experience is seen as an important component of the learning experience.
Aims
The aim of this unit is for students to hone their skills and apply the knowledge acquired in the course to their present work.
Objectives
Particular attention will be given in supervising the study to assist the student to:
1. locate relevant agencies and organisations;
2. identify and access appropriate and targeted sources of information;
3. develop collaborative skills and networks;
4. synthesise available information relating to road safety problems and issues;
5. identify policy and research implications from available data; and
6. prepare reports documenting road safety problems and related countermeasures.
Content
This unit will examine the theoretical and empirical issues underpinning a selected road safety topic, in a manner reflecting a Graduate Diploma level of study. International students will be encouraged to select a topic relevant to their home country, if feasible.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
The unit will be structured around individual consultation between the student and their supervisor. Depending on the number of students undertaking this unit, short methodology-oriented seminars may be conducted.
