This unit is designed to allow students to build on the development of their counselling skills as they pertain to particular client populations or client presenting issues. Various specialist fields of counselling are reviewed and guest lecturers share practice experience.

Rationale

The development and practice of advanced counselling skills prepares students for working with clients in the QUT clinic in the third year of the master of counselling. Students will be working in reflecting teams and will be using the skills they are developing in the current unit.

Aims

This unit aims to increase your knowledge and your skills in the use of reflecting teams, constructionist and collaborative counselling techniques by providing advanced skills training and practice.

Objectives

By completing this unit, you should be able to:

  1. Extend your theoretical knowledge of constructionist and collaborative counselling approaches to specific populations and presentations

  2. Identify advanced concepts and skills in solution focused and narrative approaches

  3. Describe and critically evaluate the application of the relevant concepts and skills in a counselling session

  4. Synthesise counselling knowledge and advanced practitioner skills by articulating your evolving counselling framework in a written paper

  • Advanced solution focused brief therapy interventions

  • Advanced narrative therapy interventions

  • Advanced practice with couples and families

  • Counselling with diverse populations

  • Counselling with reflecting teams

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Classes will be a combination of presentation of theory, whole class discussion, role plays and skills practice. You are expected to be active participants in all aspects of the learning.

Assessment

~You will receive continual formative feedback via class discussion in small group activities and structured exercises. Summative feedback will occur through the two formal assessment items.

Description: Students will complete an in-class quiz based on short answer and multiple choice questions.

Assessment name: Video & Critique
Description: You will participate in a 50 minute video demonstrating a role-play of a therapy session using a reflecting team (5 class members per video). Each class member will reflect on their group video with a 3000 word analysis of the session.
