Participation in the workplace is an integral component in the lives of most people. It is important therefore to understand the behaviour of people, individually and collectively, within the workplace. Industrial and organisational psychologists are concerned with advancing the knowledge of the relationship between people and work, and using this knowledge to promote the effective organisation of human resources.

Rationale

Participation in the workplace is an integral component in the lives of most people and further, many psychologists work in this enlarging area of the discipline. It is thus important to understand the behaviour of people, individually & collectively, within the workplace. Industrial & Organisational (I/O) psychologists are concerned with advancing the knowledge of the relationship between people and work and using this knowledge to promote the effective organisation of human resources.

Aims

The unit aims to introduce you to I/O Psychology. Upon completion of the unit, you will have an appreciation of the relevant literature, as well as the practical application of this to workplace issues. The links between research and practise underpin this unit.

Objectives

On successful completion of this subject, you should be able to:


  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the theories, concepts and models relevant to industrial and organisational psychology.


  2. Be familiar with the scientific methods and approaches for studying the behaviour of people within organisations.


  3. Apply psychological principles and practices to analyse and solve problems within the workplace.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Participation will involve your attendance at the weekly lecture and workshop program. Lectures are scheduled for 2 hours per week (beginning week 1) and workshops for 1 hour per week (beginning week 2). Assessment will require the practical application of theories/models to practical /consultancy issues. In both a conceptual and pragmatic sense, we are partners in the learning process. I am responsible for providing you with an environment where you can learn and you are responsible for participating in that environment in a way that maximises your learning.

Description: A consultancy project is undertaken. These will relate to the theory covered in lectures/readings and will be started in workshops and completed in your own time. The first will be conducted and assessed as a group project.

Assessment name: Examination
Description: A two (2) hour examination of the material covered during the course of the semester. The questions will assess lecture and workshop material, as well as material from the text and other readings. The format will include multiple choice questions, as well as an essay question.
