Sample subject outline - Semester 1 2013
Note: Subject outlines often change before the semester begins. Below is a sample outline.
Rationale
The curriculum provides in-demand Internet technology skills for designing, building and maintaining networks. Combining instructor-led, online education with hands-on laboratory exercises, the curriculum enables students to apply what they learn in class while working on actual networks. From building basic networking skills to advanced VLAN troubleshooting, the Networking Academy curriculum prepares students for industry certification that lead to lifelong opportunities. Particular emphasis is given to using decision-making and problem-solving techniques in the application of science, mathematics, communication and social studies concepts to solve networking problems. Upon successful completion of this course, students receive a Certificate of Completion.
Aims

- Improve your practical knowledge and ability to build a scalable and subnetted routed network (GC1).
- Develop implementation skills to configure router using routing protocols (GC1, GC2).
- Build knowledge to design, implement, and operate layer 2 networks for LANs and WANs (GC1, GC2, GC3, GC4).
- Build knowledge to configure TCP/IP based network services on networking devices. (GC1, GC2, GC3, GC4).
- Learn to configure various WAN point-to-point connection technologies (GC1, GC2, GC4).
- Prepare for industry certification, CCNA (CISCO Certified Network Associates) and develop as an educated, competitive and trained IT professional in the area of building and maintaining networks (GC1, GC2, GC3, GC4, GC5).

Content
The areas covered in this unit includes: layer 2 protocols, link types, related security issues and layer 3 routing protocols in LANs and WANS.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
The content of the unit is delivered through lectures, a laboratory program, case studies, and the QUT Blackboard site. Lectures cover theoretical aspects of the unit, and practical sessions provide an opportunity to solve practical programming exercises, based on the current week's lecture. Practical staff will be available to provide assistance.
The unit emphasises a 'hands-on' approach to learning through the illustration of new concepts through worked examples and demonstrations. The concepts introduced are presented in business scenarios. You will work on the case studies in the laboratory and do additional case project work each week to apply the concept learned in the laboratory. You are encouraged to work in groups. Group work will foster your ability to perform as part of a development team. You are encouraged to discuss the difficulties you are having with the assignment with your group partner or demonstrator.
A variety of online learning tools such as the Project management web site, E-Portfolio and E-locker will also be used.
Concurrent Teaching
This unit is being taught concurrently with an undergraduate offering of the same subject. University policy permits postgraduate and undergraduate students to attend the same lectures. Separate practical sessions will be provided for postgraduates students where student numbers allow. As a postgraduate student you will be required to complete separate assessment tasks that reflect the advanced knowledge and understanding of the subject. For this unit that means your assessment will be of increased complexity but not necessarily of greater length or effort. The assessment will require you to show additional evidence of critical evaluation.
Assessment
Online multi-choice exams accessible through CISCO Networking Academy website are self-paced module exams which provide a guideline in helping you assess your progress. If you are having any difficulties, contact your lecturer or unit coordinator immediately. Before the final examination, all multi-choice exams must be completed otherwise you will not be entitled to the final exam. You can obtain feedback on your progress throughout the unit through the following mechanisms:
- ask the teaching staff for advice and assistance during lectures and practical sessions
- your major assignment will be returned to you before the end of semester with comments on your progress
- private consultation with teaching staff
