Note: Subject outlines often change before the semester begins. Below is a sample outline.
Rationale
The purpose of this unit is to enable candidates to develop an understanding of the properties of ocular therapeutics drugs and their applications in clinical practice, and to develop experience with the clinical management of certain eye diseases.
Aims
The aim is to equip currently registered optometrists with the skills and expertise necessary to be able to therapeutically manage certain eye diseases and conditions. On successful completion of the Graduate Certificate, individuals may apply to the Optometry Board of Australia for a scheduled medicines endorsement to use approved S4 therapeutic agents in the course of their practice.
Objectives
1. Understand the microbiological, immunological and pharmacological principles that underpin the use of ocular medications
2. Be competent in the use of appropriate ocular examination techniques and in the subsequent diagnosis of ocular disease
3. Understand appropriate management pathways for specified ocular diseases, including initiating treatment, review and referral as needed
4. Understand the professional, ethical and legal issues related to therapeutic patient care
Content
In this unit you will undertake clinical placement activity in ophthalmological and optometric settings to reinforce clinical decision making skills and approaches to therapeutic management of eye disease. You will undertake a minimum 60 hours clinical training in a range of eye care settings (including eye care clinics and private ophthalmological practices), and submit case study papers describing clinical management.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
Through observation and participation in the examination and decision making processes of eye care practitioners you will reinforce clinical decision making skills, and review the management approaches of a range of practitioners in dealing with patients requiring therapeutic management. Self reflection and peer group discussion will enhance your development of appropriate management protocols.
