This unit offers an opportunity to observe and assist in the performance of advanced imaging techniques and procedures is important to the education of medical imaging students. The periods of clinical experience in this full year unit will enable you to gain experience in advanced imaging procedures and modalities in addition to consolidating skills in general radiography and minor procedures.

Rationale

An opportunity to observe and assist in the performance of advanced imaging techniques and procedures is important to the education of medical imaging students.

Aims

The periods of clinical experience in this full year 24 CP unit will enable you to gain experience in advanced imaging procedures and modalities in addition to consolidating skills in general radiography and minor procedures.

Objectives

On completion of this full year unit you should be able to:

1. Assist with the clinical performance and applications of more specialised advanced techniques and imaging methods.

2. Gain further experience in the full range of routine radiography and minor procedures.

3. Demonstrate the interpersonal, communications and appropriate patient care skills required in clinical practice.

4. Critically reflect on the outcomes of the imaging examinations you have participated in and report on this performance.

Content

· Computed Tomography.
· Ultrasound.Magnetic Resonance Imaging
· Fluoroscopic Procedures.
· Minor Procedures.
· General Skeletal Radiography.
· Angiography
· Ultrasound.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Supervised clinical experience attachment over a period of 5 to 6 weeks in an approved clinical department on a full-time basis.

Assessment

In order to gain a grade of 4-7 for this unit , you will be required to demonstrate a satisfactory level of achievement in each item of assessment and a mark of at least 60% overall.
Submission of Clinical Practice Records of Clinical Experience: (Formative) - A record of rostered hours and examinations/procedures carried out as an assistant or supervised performer and verfied by the supervisor must be submitted within one week of completion of the clinical period, along with the radiation badge. Failure to submit will result in an unfinalised result until submission. (Mandatory requirement, no % assigned.)Feedback will be provided on each assessment item.

Risk assessment statement

The out of the ordinary risks associated with this unit relate to the operation of x-ray and associated imaging equipment in the clinical situation. You will receive instructions on safety issues and be provided with a radiation badge to assess radiation exposure during the placement. Infection control techniques and precautions should be observed to avoid exposure to harmful agents.
