Rationale

A full and detailed appreciation of the special procedures and radiographic techniques is essential to the education of medical imaging students.

Aims

This unit is designed to extend the student's knowledge of specialised imaging practices. The practical sessions are designed to further develop and maintain positioning skills through role play and taking radiographs of sectional models to become familiar with radiographic appearances.

Objectives

On completion of this unit you should be able to:

1. Describe patient care and patient preparation, preparation of the room, immobilisation devices, patient positioning and radiographic techniques for the range of radiographic examinations and procedures covered.

2. Demonstrate positioning skills and radiographic techniques used for an extended range of general radiographic examinations in the laboratory situation and critically evaluate the resultant images with regard to technical quality and anatomical detail appropriate for diagnosis.

3. Interpret and evaluate imaging request forms, demonstrate an ability to nominate the appropriate imaging series, and perform the required general radiographic examinations using sectional models in the laboratory situation.

4. Recognise normal and abnormal anatomical structures and disease processes on radiographic images of general radiographic examinations and minor procedures.

5. Demonstrate completion of pre-clinical skills development activities as preparation for clinical placement experience.

6. Demonstrate the information literacy skills to access databases to select and review journal articles.

Content

· Preparation for special procedures

· Introduction to angiography

· Ancillary procedures including introduction to arthrography

· Paediatric imaging

· Geriatric imaging

· Bariatric imaging

· Accident and emergency imaging projections

· Image interpretation

· Accessing and reviewing journal articles

· Practical sessions and exercises in radiographic examinations

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Blended delivery encompassing formal lectures, practical sessions and online activities. Lectures provide the theoretical background information, incorporating case study image reviews, and interpretation.

Practical sessions and exercises allow the development of pre-clinical skills in radiographic positioning and techniques through role play, imaging of models, image critique and interpretation.

Assessment

Students must achieve a satisfactory level of performance in both theoretical and practical elements of this unit to achieve a passing grade. Students must achieve at least 55% to be awarded a passing grade. You will receive feedback on two components of your assessment - the literature review and the detailed critical analysis. Ongoing feedback is provided by teaching staff on your performance during practical sessions.
