Note: Subject outlines often change before the semester begins. Below is a sample outline.
Rationale
The development of positioning skills and a full appreciation of the principles of image production and processing are essential requirements in the education of medical imaging students.
Aims
This unit is designed to apply your knowledge of skeletal anatomy, radiography and imaging practices. The practical sessions are designed to develop positioning skills through role play and taking radiographs of sectional models to become familiar with radiographic appearances and image quality.
Objectives
1. Demonstrate positioning skills and radiographic techniques used for a range of routine general radiographic examinations and related pre-clinical skills in the laboratory situation.
2. Critically evaluate and analyse the resultant images produced with regard to technical quality and anatomical detail appropriate for diagnosis.
3. Recognise normal and abnormal anatomical structures and disease processes on radiographic images of general radiographic examinations.
4. Demonstrate completion of pre-clinical skills development activities as preparation for clinical placement experience including an ability to evaluate imaging request forms and nominate the appropriate imaging series.
5. Demonstrate an understanding of the physical principles of image production and processing, in the laboratory and clinical situation.
6. Demonstrate an understanding of the role of the radiographer in the clinical department.
Content
Practical exercises to develop skills in positioning techniques and image evaluation of:
· Upper Limb.
· Lower Limb.
· Pelvis and Hip.
· Shoulder Girdle.
· Chest.
· Abdomen.
· Vertebral Column
Image Processing using the facilities in the laboratory for:
· Image production.
· CR plate processing.
· Image manipulation and presentation.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
Practical sessions and exercises allow the development of pre-clinical skills in radiographic positioning and techniques through role play, imaging of models, image critique and interpretation. There is also a one week period of clinical experience.
Assessment
You must achieve a satisfactory level of performance in both laboratory and clinical elements of this unit to achieve a passing grade (minimum of 55%) to enable progression to Clinical Radiography 1. Successful completion of the clinical placement requires submission of a workbook and radiation badge within one week of completion of the clinical period. Failure to submit will result in an unfinalised result until submission.Feedback will be provided throughout the semester. during the laboratory sessions where your work will be reviewed and assessed by the teaching staff, as well as from comments provided on the laboratory on your written critiques.
