Note: Subject outlines often change before the semester begins. Below is a sample outline.

Rationale

The Bachelor of Exercise and Movement Science and Bachelor of Clinical Exercise Physiology courses are designed to prepare Exercise Physiology and Exercise Sports Science professionals for work in a wide range of areas in the field of Exercise and Sport Science. This unit is designed to support you in becoming a competent practitioner, and in applying knowledge and skills, via supervised practice in real world settings. Such practice should also develop your confidence, attitudes, values and understanding of professional issues, and provide opportunities to interact with and relate to Exercise Physiologist/Science practitioners. Involvement in placement(s) will enable you to compare different professional strands (e.g. strength and conditioning, coaching, workplace health and wellness, athletic performance, etc.) and evaluate how your personal skills and qualities match each of the selected worksites. Practicum opportunities will be linked to four broad professional areas: Health & Fitness, Sports Performance/ Development, Rehabilitation, Occupational/Corporate Health and Wellness.

Aims

To apply practical and theoretical knowledge gained in previous study to a workplace environment, further develop your communication, professional and practitioner skills and competencies in Exercise and Sport Science.

Objectives

On completion of the unit, you should be able to:

Investigate, and document the organisational and operational aspects of an Exercise or Sports Science oriented organisation or business that you attended for your major practicum hours.

  1. Demonstrate competency in practical application of Exercise and Sports Science knowledge, competencies and skills commensurate with your level of study.

  2. Engage in critical reflection of your practice for ongoing learning and improvement of your professional capabilities.

  3. Demonstrate effective communication skills through a range of verbal, non-verbal and intercommunication interactions with clients, supervisors and colleagues.

  4. Demonstrate the competency to administer, interpret, and evaluate a range of health and fitness assessments as the components of a standard health and fitness appraisal.

Content

This practicum will provide an internal practicum experience whereby you will assess the health and fitness of a range of clients within the Healthy Populations. Once completed and passed this internal component you will then be provided an opportunity to experience external sites of varying scopes of exercise and sports science practice. The professional practicum experience will increase your awareness of the skills/abilities required of professionals working with Healthy Populations in the exercise, sports and health and fitness industries. You will develop your skills in critical reflective thinking to support you in developing and improving your professional capabilities.

Practicum planning, in association with the Unit Co-ordinator and Worksite Supervisor/s, will take place before the start of the placement. If you intend starting your practicum outside semester time, you must arrange a meeting with the Unit Coordinator to discuss how this will occur and the assessment required.

Professional practical experience will be undertaken in an outside organization once you have completed the QUT internal practicum. You are expected to undertake at least 100 hours of work experience in the outside organization. After a suitable period of orientation, you will participate fully in the day-to-day operation of the organisation.

Development of generic professional skills and attributes - the practicum experience provides an opportunity to develop your specific clinical exercise physiology/science and generic professional skills. The latter include interpersonal communication, application of performance feedback, teamwork, organisational and personal management, critical thinking, writing skills and oral presentation.

You are required to complete 140 hours placement in this unit. This is comprised of a 40 hour placement to be conducted internally through the School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences and a 100 hour component in a worksite external to the university. Detailed explanation of the process, organisation and requirements of each placement will be provided on Blackboard and in lectures.

During the external practicum experience, you are asked to work with your supervisor to, undertake appropriate operational tasks/duties and to reflect on your performance in order to learn and improve as you progress through the placement.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

These will include compulsory attendance of lectures and workshops offered on campus, as well as supervisor communications, and utilisation of materials placed on blackboard.

Administration of the practicum process is supported by the Workplace Integrated Learning Systems (WILS) Office personnel.
