Rationale
The application of psychological techniques and processes in sport and exercise explores theory, research and practice of methods that facilitate participation, enjoyment and optimum performance through enhancing the psychological knowledge and skills of coaches, athletes, parents, exercisers, fitness professionals, and athletic trainers. The practice of applied exercise / sport psychology involves individual and group interventions, and the capacity to select and use appropriate methods in each setting is crucial.
Aims
This unit extends your knowledge of key psychological theories that underpin exercise and performance and enhances your ability to critically appraise and evaluate sport / exercise psychology literature. The unit also aims to provide you with the skills to undertake key intervention strategies and apply effective psychological skills training in a designated exercise / sports environment.
Objectives
On successful completion of this unit, you should be able to:
1. Critically appraise key psychological theories that underpin exercise and sport performance.
2. Demonstrate skills in problem analysis based on current psychological theory in sport & exercise psychology
3. Devise evidence-based psychological interventions for improving participation and/ or performance.
4. Present research in an appropriate written and oral form.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning
A workshop style approach will be used to encourage students to analyse, evaluate and actively engage in the learning process. Practical activities and Case Studies will be used to illustrate and explore the psychological strategies and their implementation.
Assessment
Written feedback will be provided for each assessment.
Formative feedback will be provided in an on-going manner throughout the teaching programme.
