This unit focuses on the wide range of factors that impact on the health of individuals in the two crucial stages of life: childhood and adolescence. An analysis is made of knowledge, beliefs and skills required for promoting health-enhancing behaviours during these ages and experience is provided on some of the skills needed to assess and maintain the health status of children and adolescents.

Rationale

The dynamic health status of children and adolescents is influenced by a range of health determinants. Knowledge of health issues and the underlying factors involved may be beneficial for any person required to work with children and adolescents, including teachers and health professionals. Understanding factors that impact on the health and wellbeing of children and adolescents is necessary for fa?cilitating the holistic development of children and adolescents.

Aims

This unit provides you with an opportunity to develop an understanding of a range of child and adolescent health issues and the associated factors that can impact upon health status. You will be encouraged to explore health issues from a contextualised position, for the purpose of developing a greater awareness of measures that can be undertaken to promote the health and wellbeing of children and adolescents.

Objectives

On completion of this unit, you should be able to:


  1. Demonstrate knowledge of concepts associated with child and adolescent health including; understanding and defining health issues, prevalence, health determinants, impact and health behaviour.

  2. Evaluate the relationships evident between a broad range of factors influencing health and the impact of these factors on the health status of children and adolescents.

  3. Understand the nature and health needs of specific groups of children and adolescents in various settings - home, family, school and community.

  4. Critically analyse and report on health concerns and issues relevant for child and adolescent populations.

  5. Develop strategies for promoting the health and wellness of children and adolescents.

Content

This unit covers a broad range of contemporary physical and mental health topics associated with child and adolescent populations. Examples of topics include: substance use, cyberbullying, anxiety, depression, sexual health, lifestyle related chronic illness and body image. Topic exploration will focus on prevalence, determinants, health behaviours and preventive strategies.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Teaching approaches include lectures, tutorials and workshops with opportunities for whole class, small group and autonomous learning periods.

Assessment

Formative assessment and student support.

The unit coordinator and tutors will be available in person at specified times or via email to answer questions. Activities related to key concepts will be conducted during tutorials to help student understanding. Tutors will observe student participation in group and individual activities during tutorials and attempt to engage students in substantive conversation during the semester.
