Note: Subject outlines often change before the semester begins. Below is a sample outline.

Rationale

This is a practically based unit designed to introduce pre-service physical education teachers and coaches to strategies appropriate for the teaching/learning of performance activities underpinned by motor learning theory (constraints led approach). Experiences relating to the design, implementation and assessment of safe practice within these activities are offered to broaden students' perspective of a historically games-dominated Physical education discourse.

Aims

This unit will provide you with valuable modelling for management of students and the learning of specific performance skills. You will participate in a range of performance physical activities common to physical education programs. Exposure to these activities will highlight the competencies and strategies necessary to facilitate movement learning experiences.

Objectives

On successful completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  1. Identify and describe key movement principles appropriate to effective performance within performance activities such as aquatics and track and field.

  2. Apply theoretically driven pedagogical skills, (constraint led approach) and safety considerations to the teaching and learning of performance activities.

  3. Analyse movement and design learning experiences to improve performance.

Content

General principles to teach and coach performance activities (aquatics, track and field) will be modelled via practical sessions and introduced using key concepts from contemporary approaches to teaching and learning. This will provide a resource for subsequent use when teaching/coaching the above in the school/club setting.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

A weekly practical tutorial will be inquiry-based and discussion oriented to support the development of critical thinking and reflective skills necessary for your professional practice. In this time, a selective problem-solving, task-based approach to teaching and learning will be used to encourage interaction and learning. The approach will be supported by additional Blackboard resources.

Assessment

There are both formative and summative assessment items within this unit. A total of two (2) assessment tasks related to unit outcomes are to be completed by you as part of unit requirements.Formative assessment feedback occurs continuously during the unit and includes teacher and student feedback, both in oral and written modes, on a variety of tasks. Summative assessment feedback is provided by individual grading rubrics, narrative comments, and where required, appointments with sessional staff to review assessed work.
