Sample subject outline - Semester 1 2013
Note: Subject outlines often change before the semester begins. Below is a sample outline.
Rationale
It is a widely accepted belief that an individual's health is significantly influenced by the lifestyle that he/she adopts. Although the nature of one's lifestyle is largely determined by the individual, this determination operates in an environmental context that places some limitations on choice and resultant health. This choice of how to live is therefore selected from a wide range of options, thus producing huge variations in patterns of living and related health outcomes.
To achieve and maintain an acceptable level of health in such an open market situation, it is beneficial for an individual to have a well developed, positive self-concept, a sound knowledge of lifestyle issues and their implications and the decision-making skills necessary to make wise choices.
It is highly desirable for an individual to know and understand themselves and to have this facet of their own lives in order before they attempt to provide education and guidance to others on such lifestyle matters and decision making.
The focus of this unit is the development of such qualities for personal maintenance and improvement. Movements in this direction will be achieved by analysing the processes involved in developing individuals capable of taking control of their lifestyles and resultant health. Much of this analysis will be self focused.
