Sample subject outline - Semester 2 2013
Note: Subject outlines often change before the semester begins. Below is a sample outline.
Rationale
With the implementation of Smart Moves, teachers working with children in the compulsory school years require the competencies to develop learning experiences in Health and Physical Education (HPE). In addition to living effectively in a rapidly changing environment, children need strategies to develop and constructively use their potential mental and physical capabilities. Health and Physical Education can add significantly to this development by providing physical, emotional, social and intellectual support for developmental human functioning. In order to be able to meaningfully implement health and physical education lessons, teachers need to base their professional behaviour on current discourse surrounding health and physical education pedagogical approaches.
Aims
In this unit you will learn of the connection between physical activity and health and its role in meeting the developmental needs of children. You will be exposed to knowledge of how to integrate Health and Physical Education with other KLA areas to maximise learning opportunities for children.
Objectives
On completion of this unit you should be able to:
- Understand and appreciate the relevance of the health and physical education key learning area within the primary school curriculum. (QCT standard 1)

Approaches to Teaching and Learning
Practical sessions are based on problem based learning approaches with students actively participating in learning in, through and about Health and Physical Education. This unit is delivered through a combination of lectures, practical workshops, online interactive teaching resources, tutorials, and discussion. Your learning will be enhanced by weekly reading as specified in the unit material. Both assessment tasks are designed as learning experiences, and are designed to help build your personal and professional knowledge and skills in designing quality HPE programs for young children.
Note: The learning experiences on the Caboolture campus will include opportunities for students to experience HPE within local primary school environments as part of the Teaching Educators Done Differently (TEDD) project.
Assessment
Assessment includes both formative and summative items. You will have the opportunity to gain formative assessment replies by submitting responses to tasks designated within unit modules. Further information concerning assessment will be available from the Week One Document and Blackboard.
Formative Assessment
The unit coordinator and tutors will be available in person at specified times or via email to answer your questions. Activities related to key concepts will be conducted in tutorials to help your understanding. Tutors will observe your participation in group and individual activities during tutorials and attempt to engage you in substantive conversation during the semester.
