Foundations of Movement for Educators
Unit code: HMB278
Credit points: 12
Information about fees and unit costs
This unit provides an opportunity for critical inquiry and analysis of human movement from a multidisciplinary perspective. The integration of the human movement principles of sub-disciplines (functional anatomy, biomechanics, motor control, sociology of sport and physical activity and development) are evaluated and applied to coaching of sport and teaching and learning in physical education.

Rationale
Contemporary physical education and coaching requires pedagogists to provide effective learning environments through the application and integration of sport science knowledge. Consequently, teachers and coaches are expected to have an understanding of fundamental knowledge in sport science discipline areas including biomechanics, motor behaviour and sport and exercise psychology. This unit is focussed on the specialised senior (years 11 and 12) physical education curriculum and sports coaching context.
Aims
This unit develops understanding of theoretical and applied concepts in biomechanics, motor behaviour and sport and exercise psychology. Opportunities are provided to integrate theoretical knowledge into applied practice.
Objectives
On completion of this module, you should be able to:
- Define and describe existing theoretical concepts in biomechanics, motor behaviour and sport and exercise psychology (EPA 1.1);
- Review, analyse and draw suitable conclusions from relevant material to design appropriate skill development programmes (EPA 3.1);
- Search literature and retrieve subject appropriate information (EPA 1.1);
- Communicate subject specific concepts at a basic level (EPA 1.1);
- Implement theory driven practice to practical field settings (EPA 3.1);
- Work as a team to report findings of investigations (EPA 2.2).
Content
This unit develops the students' theoretical knowledge base and provides an opportunity to develop human movement skills using an inter-disciplinary perspective. The integration of theory from biomechanics, motor behaviour and sport and exercise psychology are applied to coaching of sport and teaching and learning in physical education. Regular Opportunities will be provided to apply and integrate knowledge from these areas to devise appropriate instructional methods.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
The principle aim of the teaching strategy on this unit is to develop knowledge and understanding of existing theories and a grasp of the relationship between theory and practice. Furthermore the paper will support the development of autonomous research skills, communicate knowledge and understanding via a variety of formats. Students will also experience problem solving while working as a team. This will be achieved by adopting a range of learning activities from 'traditional' lecture/tutorial, practicals, seminars, self-directed learning through to supported open learning delivered via a virtual learning environment (blackboard).
Assessment
Formative assessment in this unit will involve (i) feedback during student/lecturer/tutor discussions about tutorial assignments, ( ii) the application of theory to practical teaching and coaching of sport skills.
