Rationale

This unit builds upon the knowledge of psychological influences on sport, exercise, and physical activity. The primary focus of this unit is the understanding of psychological principles and issues related to participation and adherence exercise programs. Psychological issues related to sports performance are also covered.

Aims

In general, this module will cover the theoretical and practical issues concerned with the psychology of exercise. More specifically this will include, the measurement of exercise behaviour, the factors concerned with the motivation to exercise and exercise adherence, and the psychological effects of exercise. The use of exercise in weight regulation and the psychological influences on the relationship between exercise and appetite control will also be covered.

Objectives

On successful completion of this unit you should be able to:

  1. Identify and evaluate key psychological factors influencing participation in sport and exercise.

  2. Understand various theoretical and practical approaches to enhancing participation and performance in exercise.

  3. Describe the concepts associated with psychological determinants of exercise behaviour.

  4. Describe and evaluate some of the psychological consequences of exercise.

  5. Know how to measure exercise and physical activity, and to understand the associated problems.

  6. Understand the role of exercise in weight regulation and eating disorders.

  7. Understand how arousal and anxiety influence sports performance.

  8. Experience preparing and delivering a small group presentation.

  3. Motivation to Exercise

  4. Exercise Adherence

  5. The Psychological Effects of Exercise

  6. The Influence of Stress and Anxiety on Sports Performance

  7. The Use of Exercise in Weight Regulation

  8. The Psychological Influences on the Relationship Between Exercise and Appetite Control

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Teaching will include lectures, inquiry-oriented tutorials, and discussions of student seminar presentations. You will be expected to attend and participate actively in classes. Absence from tutorials and lectures for medical or other emergency reasons should be presented in writing (e.g., medical certificate) and a copy given to the lecturer or tutor concerned.

Assessment

All aspects of the assessment described below must be completed for a grade of pass or higher to be awarded in this unit.

Formative assessment in this unit will involve feedback during the tutorials.

Description: In small groups you will develop a practical-based session and give a presentation.

Description: This exam will include questions on topics covered in the Lectures and tutorials. Length: 2 hrs.
