This unit is an introduction to principles of nutrition in relation to the physical activity setting, and the role of nutrition and physical activity in weight management. This unit also covers the essential elements of child growth and development (auxology) in relation to nutrition and health. The unit is designed to underpin studies in exercise physiology and sports nutrition.

Rationale
Sound nutrition and regular physical activity are essential for good health. This unit will be taught in two modules. The first module will examine the key macro- and micronutrients comprising a balanced diet and address dietary guidelines that encourage a healthy lifestyles minimise the risk of the development of diet-related diseases. The second module will examine the benefits of physical activity across the lifespan in respect of chronic disease and physical disability and address guidelines for developing physical activity programs for each age group. Other topics include nutrition and energy requirements of exercise, obesity and weight control.
Aims
The aim of this unit is to provide an introduction to key principles of nutrition and physical activity of relevance to individuals at various stages of the lifespan.
Objectives
On Completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Demonstrate a general knowledge of nutrition and energy value of food.
2. Demonstrate a theoretical understanding of overweight and obesity from a nutrition and physical activity perspective with specific reference to body composition, energy and weight control.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of physical activity in childhood, adolescence and adulthood.
4. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the design and implementation of physical activity programs across the life span and for chronic disease and disability.
5. Demonstrate a conceptual knowledge of the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating and the National Physical Activity Guidelines.
6. Demonstrate a general understanding of physical activity assessment.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning
The unit will be based on a lecture and tutorial format.
Assessment
Formative assessment in this unit will involve feedback during:
- student/lecturer negotiation on the development of the Case Studies;
- discussion in tutorial sessions.
