The dimensions and interrelationships of health, physical activity and wellness are studied. Basic principles of conditioning and exercise prescription necessary to demonstrate the impact of physical activity on lifestyle diseases, health behaviours and wellness are examined. Principles and theory of behaviour change are employed.

Rationale
This unit takes an holistic approach to the social, physical, emotional, career, intellectual, environmental and spiritual dimensions of fitness, health and wellness. Pivotal skills in assessing and applying these components of wellness will form the foundation for understanding of yourself and others in life and in your further studies in this course.
Aims
The aim of this unit is to provide an understanding of the interrelatedness of the fitness, health and wellness dimensions as a basic premise in the adoption of positive health related behaviours.
Objectives
On successful completion of this unit you should be able to:
- Describe the interrelated nature of the dimensions of wellness
- Identify the individual attributes in the components of fitness, health and wellness to establish wellness oriented goals
- Apply and reflect on the principles of behaviour change to health and wellness- related constructs
- Recognise the social and ethical responsibilities and inter-cultural perspectives appropriate to professional practice.
Content
The following topics will be covered:
- Health, physical activity, fitness, health related fitness, exercise and wellness
- Physical inactivity influenced lifestyle diseases, health behaviours and health problems
- Impact and effect of physical activity, fitness and exercise on health/wellness and quality of life
- Health of Australians; health of adolescents; health of university students
- Health behaviour: basic theories; self-esteem, locus of control; stages of change; planning for change; motivation of change; adherence to change
- Human physiology: basic consideration of the cardiovascular, muscular and energy systems in relation to physical activity, health and wellness
- Conditioning and programming; basic fitness, health and wellness assessment.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
An emphasis on reflective skills to inform professional practice will be supported through a personal profile of your own wellness including a commitment to life changing strategies in this personal learning journey. Lectures, tutorials and laboratory practicals such as indoor and outdoor experiences will be augmented by self and peer assessment, group work which develops team skills, so critical to your professional practice. Online formative tests, and progressive summative tests in tutorials will support your early progress in the unit, and provide regular feedback to acknowledge the new demands of university study.
