Sample subject outline - Semester 2 2013

Note: Subject outlines often change before the semester begins. Below is a sample outline.

Rationale

Web technologies and applications are reshaping contemporary organisations. By 2009 it has been predicted that more than 80% of organisations will have blogs and more than 50% of organisations will have wikis as part of their business solutions and strategies. Furthermore, with the advent of Cloud Computing, many companies are outsourcing key business functions to external web applications. The successful contemporary organisation requires expertise in not just business and management practice but in the critical design, use and consequences of new and emerging technologies. This unit will explore the ways in which IT has impacted on how organisations design and deliver activities and services internally and externally.

As a masters student you will expected to partner with the teaching staff to form part of the executive of this unit. You will be required to demonstrate leadership by contributing to the structure, format and running of the online community.

Aims

The aim of this unit is to provide you with an understanding of how web 2.0 is changing the way contemporary organisations function.

Objectives

On successful completion of this unit you should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of the role and influence of new and emerging web applications and digital technology within the contemporary organisation (GC1, GC2, GC3);

  2. Demonstrate knowledge of advanced principles for appraising and implementing strategies and solutions for organisational success drawing upon the new and emerging web applications and technologies (GC1, GC2, GC3, GC4);

Concurrent Teaching
This unit is being taught concurrently with an undergraduate offering of the same subject. University policy permits postgraduate and undergraduate students to attend the same lectures. As a postgraduate student you will be required to complete separate assessment tasks that reflect the advanced knowledge and understanding of the subject. For this unit that means your assessment will be of increased complexity but not necessarily of greater length or effort. In assessment 1, as executives in the unit, you will be required to contribute to the strategy, structure and format of the discussions held by the online community (in collaboration with the teaching team). In assessment 2 you will be expected to demonstrate a stronger more sophisticated approach and to base your work around a real industry client who can provide feedback.

Assessment

You will be expected to contribute on a consistent basis to an online community whilst also developing your own digital presence. Your contribution will be assessed individually and also as part of a group. Work will be submitted on the internet or via the Online Assignment System (OAS).You can obtain feedback on your progress throughout the unit through the following
mechanisms:

  • teaching staff and your colleagues will provide advice and assistance during lectures and online activities;

  • your major assignment will be returned to you before the end of semester with comments on your progress;
