The aim of this unit is to provide you with an awareness of the activities in which IM professionals are engaged within various organisational contexts. You will use case studies and introduce yourself to the strategic and analytic elements that comprise information management activities. These activities include the alignment of enterprise information and business planning, enterprise information policy, evaluation of information resources & systems and applications of the information inventory.

Rationale
The concept of information management (IM) has emerged from a number of disciplines. Information management is fundamental to the intelligent use of information & the creation of knowledge. In this unit you will focus on the management of information as an enterprise resource. You will examine its formative influences and building on the multiple dimensions of enterprise architecture frameworks, you will consider the elements of an IM infrastructure and the processes used to manage information as a resource.
Aims
The aim of this unit is to provide you with an awareness of the activities in which IM professionals are engaged within various organisational contexts. You will use case studies and introduce yourself to the strategic and analytic elements that comprise information management activities. These activities include the alignment of enterprise information and business planning, enterprise information policy and the evaluation of information resources & systems.

On completion of this unit you should be able to:
- Critically discuss the key issues, elements and trends within the field of information management. (GC1, GC2, GC6, GC7)
- Undertake key IM activities such as information auditing, information mapping, evaluation of information resources and information policy formation. (GC1, GC2, GC6)

Content
In this unit you will work with case studies that highlight different aspects of enterprise information management. Your study of analytical elements will focus on business information needs and the identification and evaluation of the information resources used to address these needs. The strategic elements you will address focus on planning and management activities and organizational factors that form an enabling infrastructure for IM.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
Lecture materials will provide concepts and stimulate thinking concerning IM philosophy, principles and approaches. Practical exercise materials are contextualised to present IM challenges and simulate enterprise IM activities and will be offered in an online format. Assessment items provide the opportunity to practise and apply learning.

You will be expected to undertake a number of assessments related to the learning outcomes of this unit (see below).Feedback will be given in written and verbal formats regarding the achievement of the assessment requirements according to an identified criteria marking grid.
