Rationale

Please direct enquiries in the first instance to Health Research Ph:07 3138 4666 or Email: health.research@qut.edu.au

HLP102 Research Seminars provides an opportunity to develop skills to scope and focus on a research project and acquire knowledge and skills in project management and communication. As the Honours dissertation (submitted in HLP103) encompasses original research, attendance and presentation at seminars is an important preparatory period in the development of research skills. One of the key skills associated with research programs and the professional development of students is the ability to present research findings to peers and the wider scientific community.

Thus the purpose of this unit is to provide you with the opportunity to present a paper on your progress in the preparation of your dissertation. It is an opportunity to share ideas, problems, philosophical concerns, methods and technique issues, analysis and findings or any other issues relating to the scholarship and research that you are engaged in.

Aims

This unit supports the course objectives of educating you in a specific research area by providing a forum for discussing your research. It is intended that feedback from other students and staff will support work on the final draft of your dissertation.

Objectives

On completion of this unit you should be able to:

1. prepare and deliver a research presentation with supporting overheads and/or audiovisual material as required;
2. demonstrate a sound knowledge and understanding of your research project;
3. communicate ideas and findings effectively in a group setting.

In this way the generic capacity for effective oral communication will be developed.

Content

The content is in two parts:

1. presentation and attendance at seminars; and
2. attendance at seminars

You will be required to prepare and complete a seminar presentation as well as attend scheduled seminars as indicated by the School Honours Coordinator.

Research seminars are run in Semester 1 and Semester 2 and attendance should be during your semester of enrolment in HLP102. Students are expected to attend all seminars to enable them to participate fully in the seminar process.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

You should meet regularly with your supervisor. The format and frequency of these meetings will be at the discretion of your supervisor. You are required to attend seminars as approved by your School Honours Coordinator to foster knowledge of research and presentation skills. Seminars will be held throughout the semester and you will be advised of the dates well in advance.

The Honours seminar you present will be attended by supervisors, other members of academic staff and other students undertaking research within the School/Faculty.
