Rationale

The Advanced Qualitative Methods unit builds on knowledge developed in HLN405. The focus is on the development of research skills to ensure credible and trustworthy qualitative research outcomes. The unit is designed to develop in-depth understanding of qualitative research methods and has a focus on justifying and undertaking data collection, data analysis and interpretation and reporting of qualitative research.

Aims

The aim is to advance student knowledge and skills in relation to the methods of qualitative research.

Objectives

Successful completion of this unit requires that you are able to:

  1. Develop essential skills related to a range of qualitative research methods (GC 1, 2, 4);

  2. Demonstrate essential skills in collecting, coding, analysing and reporting qualitative results (GC 1, 2, 4);

  3. Argue and demonstrate the relationship between qualitative methodology and method in research design (GC 1, 2, 4);

  4. Apply knowledge and skills of qualitative research method to a research project (GC 1, 3, 4, 5, 7); and

  5. Communicate in the language of specific methodologies (GC 1, 2, 3, 5, 6).

Content

The unit content is organised around the development of qualitative methods as they are applied in sampling, data collection and data analysis. The unit has a primarily applied focus which extends to the collection of different forms of research data and to the analysis of data. It is an ideal unit for those interested in furthering knowledge, skills and abilities related to qualitative research. In addition to the collection and analysis of data, students will be required to undertake a critical review of published research and the ways in which methods are explained and justified in that research. These combined activities will ensure that students develop advanced level skills in research evaluation, research design, data collection and analysis of qualitative data.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

The unit incorporates lectures, workshops, practical activities and student presentations:

Lectures: Lectures are designed to introduce students to principles underlying the range of qualitative research methods. Lectures are conducted in conjunction with workshops.

Workshops: Workshops will be a primary teaching strategy and the emphasis will be on practical activities. Workshops will review, discuss and apply concepts and principles to assist learning and research skill development.

Student presentations: Student presentations will also take the form of workshops whereby students practically demonstrate the processes of qualitative data collection and analysis.

On-line learning: There will be an online site that provides a central repository for all learning related materials for the unit, and access to other resources that will extend educational opportunities for students.
