An important aspect of postgraduate development is the opportunity to engage in research or project work in a specialist field of study in industry or as a component of consultancy work. Working in industry or a health-related agency, locally or internationally, can provide students with valuable work experience and develop skills and expertise that advances their profession or the particular industry involved. The research option enables students to work independently under the guidance of a supervisor. The research may be a report that makes a contribution to knowledge or a study in which the student critically analyses existing knowledge and produces observations and conclusions of value to the field concerned.

Rationale

The opportunity for students to engage in research and/or project work in their specialist field of study in industry or as a component of consultancy work is an important aspect of their postgraduate development. In the process of working in industry or within a health-related agency locally or internationally students can gain valuable work experience and develop skills and expertise that advance their profession or the particular industry with whom they are involved. The research option in this unit enables students to undertake an independent and original piece of work completed with the guidance of a supervisor. The research work may be a report which makes a contribution to knowledge or a study in which the student critically analyses and appraises existing knowledge and produces observations and conclusions of value to the field concerned.

Aims

To gain valuable work experience in industry and develop professional skills and expertise by undertaking an original research project.

Objectives

To provide students with a range of opportunities that enable them to undertake fieldwork, project or research work in a discipline area relevant to the health sciences. At the conclusion of this unit you will have demonstrated the ability to:

  1. Demonstrate critical thinking and a consideration of research methods;
  2. Demonstrate an ability to search, access, evaluate and manage literature and information;
  3. Liaise with an appropriate workplace in the collaborative development of a workplace-based project or research study;
  4. Design, implement and evaluate an appropriate project/research study that enhances skills and knowledge in a relevant professional area;
  5. Produce a written report/manuscript with analysis and interpretation of the project/research study and workplace experience.

Content

The content of the unit will vary according to the workplace placement and the negotiation between the workplace, the student and the supervisor. For students undertaking research work the content will vary according to the interests of the student, the supervisory staff and the area to be investigated. The student is expected to work independently on the project during the 13 week semester for approximately 24 hours per week, or equivalent.

Prior to enrolling in this unit, students MUST contact the Unit Coordinator to discuss supervision and expectations of enrolment.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Students will be required to meet regularly with the supervisor when undertaking research work. For those students completing consultancy or project work regular meetings with a university supervisor should be negotiated at the commencement of the activity. Individual consultation will form the major teaching approach.
