Students develop an advanced understanding of a topic in the natural resource sciences that is highly relevant to the general area of their proposed research project. The structure and content is variable and can be tailored to the specific requirement of each project and the background of the student. A formal outline of the unit including objectives, content and assessment relevant to the individual course of study will be developed by the supervisor and approved by the Head of School. Content may include active participation in tutorials, workshops, laboratory/field techniques and components of advanced level undergraduate units. If components of advanced level undergraduate units are included, they should not exceed 70% of the total assessment.

Rationale

The multidisciplinary nature of much research in the natural resource sciences necessitates an understanding of topics from a variety of disciplines that impinge on the main research area. The need for understanding can vary from inter-disciplinary field/laboratory methodologies through data analysis/computing to concepts from a variety of disciplines.

Aims

Students who complete this unit should develop an understanding of a topic that is highly relevant to the general area of their research project.

Objectives

Develop and demonstrate a high level of comprehension of their chosen research topic in Natural Resourse Sciences.

Content

Given the diversity of individual research areas contained within the generic term 'natural resource sciences', the structure and content of this unit is variable and can be tailored to the specific requirements of each project and the background of the student. Content may include active participation in workshops, laboratory/field techniques and components of advanced level undergraduate units. If components of advanced level undergraduate units are included, they should not contribute more than 70% to the total assessment.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

A formal outline of the unit including objectives, content and assessment relevant to the course of study will be developed by the supervisor and approved by the Head of School.

Assessment

Assessment will take the form of student negotiated tasks in consultation with supervisory and/or academic staff.Feedback will be provided both verbally and in written form. Additional feedback can be sought through the unit coordinator.

Description: Dependent on the formal outline developed for the individual program. Assessment is on a 7 point scale. Where reviews or seminars form a significant part of the assessment, they will be assessed by three inndependent internal referees. Assessment criteria will be presented in the formal course outline.
