Information about fees and unit costs
This unit includes a public seminar plus an extensive discussion period designed to provide positive feedback from staff and students on the progress of the research project. The presentation should be designed in conjunction with the supervisor and include project objectives, progress to date, preliminary data and problems for discussion. The seminar should normally be presented within 12 months (full-time) or 24 months (part-time) of commencement of the postgraduate program.

Rationale
An important component of a research investigation is informing peers and the academic environment on the outcomes of the research project and the implications of the data to the subject area.
Aims
Students who complete this unit should:
Have presented their project research data to academics and students working in related fields.
Have obtained feedback on their project outcomes and findings.
Have gained additional experience at presenting their work to a scientific audience.
Objectives
1. Demonstrated ability to construct and conduct a research program
2. Demonstrated ability to collate appropriate research data
3. Demonstrate comprehension of research methodologies relevant to study area and present findings to a scientific audience
Content
A public seminar that includes: project objectives, research data and implications.
An extended discussion period that provides the student with feedback on their project outomes and quality.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
The seminar will be designed in conjunction with the supervisor. The seminar will normally be presented at a specified date before 24 months of commencement of the research program. An additional seminar may be required if significant changes to the latter stages of the project are identified in the first seminar.
Assessment
Assessment will take the form of student negotiated tasks in consultation with supervisory and/or academic staff.Feedback will be provided both verbally and in written form. Additional feedback can be sought through the unit coordinator.

Description:
A public seminar 100%. Assessment is satisfactory/unsatisfactory. The seminar will be assessed by three independent internal referees with reference to the following criteria: appropriateness of design to objectives; appropriateness of methodology to objectives; presentation of preliminary data; appropriateness of analysis to preliminary data; identification of possible problems.
