Rationale
The purpose of this seminar is to assess the candidate's ability to complete the proposed program in the set time period. The candidate will be required to demonstrate that the project design and implementation can satisfy the research objectives and meet the relevant time frames.
Aims
To assist students in developing and realising a research design and research plan.
Objectives
Students who complete this unit should:
Have had their research design and research plan assessed by academics and students working in related fields.
Have obtained the necessary feedback to ensure that their experimental design is relevant and rigorous and can be achieved within the set timeframe.
Have gained experience at presenting their proposed work to a scientific audience.
Content
A public seminar that includes: background to the project area, specific objectives of the proposed project, methodology to be followed and possible outcomes.
An extended discussion period that provides the student with sufficient detail to amend the experimental design if necessary.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
The seminar will be designed in conjunction with the supervisor. To benefit from feedback, the seminar should be presented at the completion of Year 1 (full-time) but before the major research has commenced. An additional seminar may be required if significant changes to the original experimental design are identified in the first seminar.
Assessment
Assessment will take the form of student negotiated tasks in consultation with supervisory and/or academic staff.Feedback will be provided both verbally and in written form. Additional feedback can be sought through the unit coordinator.
