Credit points: 12
Information about fees and unit costs

This is a companion unit to NRN100 that allows students to (a) prepare a review of a second area relevant to the research project or (b) consider a wider subject area in greater depth. If option (b) is chosen, a single review can qualify as total assessment for both NRN100 and NRN101. In this case, the review should be approximately 10,000 words and be a critical analysis of a substantial research area.

Note: Subject outlines often change before the semester begins. Below is a sample outline.

Rationale

In order to commence independent research, students must be able to review and report on literature relevant to the investigation. An understanding of the literature not only identifies current concepts but also identifies knowledge gaps and so provides the framework for the research.

In many instances in natural resource sciences, research topics are necessarily multidisciplinary and it is necessary to provide a literature review in:

(a) a second area relevant to the research project or

(b) consider a wider subject area than can be accommodated under NRN100.

Aims

This unit aims to develop skills related to reviewing nad reporting on literature relevant to specific investigative topics. It develops research capability in students in preparation for further study.

Objectives

Students who complete this unit should:

Have a broad appreciation of the literature relevant to the proposed research topic.

Have identified the relevance of the proposed research topic within the framework of current understanding.

Content

A review of literature in an area of direct relevance to the research project. The review should demonstrate: a broad appreciation of the literature, a critical appraisal of research to date and identify the relevance of the research project within the framework of current understanding. If option (a) is chosen, the review should normally be approximately 5 000 words. If option (b) is chosen, the review should normally be approximately 10000 words and be a critical analysis of a substantial research area.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

The review will be designed in conjunction with the supervisor. Formal classes will not be held; instead, students will meet regularly with the supervisor to discuss content, logic of presentation and format. Feedback on drafts of the review are an essential part of the learning process in this unit.

Assessment

Assessment will take the form of student negotiated tasks in consultation with supervisory and/or academic staff.Feedback will be provided both verbally and in written form. Additional feedback can be sought through the unit coordinator.
