The review should be designed in conjunction with the supervisor and demonstrate a broad appreciation of the literature, a critical appraisal of research to date, and the relevance of the research project within the framework of current understanding. Reviews should normally be approximately 5000 words.

Rationale
In order to commence independent research, students must be able to review and report on literature relevant to the investigation. An understanding of the literature not only identifies current concepts but also identifies knowledge gaps and so provides the framework for the research.
Aims
This unit aims to develop skills related to reviewing nad reporting on literature relevant to specific investigative topics. It develops research capability in students in preparation for further study.
Objectives
Students who complete this unit should:
Have a broad appreciation of the literature relevant to the proposed research topic.
Have identified the relevance of the proposed research topic within the framework of current understanding.
Content
A review of literature in an area of direct relevance to the research project. The review should demonstrate: a broad appreciation of the literature, a critical appraisal of research to date and identify the relevance of the research project within the framework of current understanding. The review should normally be approximately 5,000 words.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
The review will be designed in conjunction with the supervisor. Formal classes will not be held; instead, students will meet regularly with the supervisor to discuss content, logic of presentation and format. Feedback on drafts of the review are an essential part of the learning process in this unit.
Assessment
Assessment will take the form of student negotiated tasks in consultation with supervisory and/or academic staff.Feedback will be provided both verbally and in written form. Additional feedback can be sought through the unit coordinator.

Literature Review
Description:
The review will be assessed by two independent internal referees with reference to the following criteria: coverage of literature; use of relevant literature; inclusion of key references; logical relationship of literature to research area; identification of knowledge gaps; relationship of project to knowledge gaps. The independent assessments may be moderated by comments from the supervisor on information which may not be evident from the review. These criteria are: effort and efficiency; self motivation and direction; innovation; amount of assistance provided in the preparation of the paper. Supervisors are also required to provide an assessment grade and rank the paper with all other papers prepared under his/her supervision.
