Rationale
Classroom teachers and professionals working in educational contexts take an active role in the total development of their students. This involves helping students cope with the stressors and personal conflicts that impinge upon their academic performance. This unit builds on the knowledge and skills gained in its pre-requisite and will assist you to effectively counsel students presenting with personal or academic concerns or problems.
Aims
The aim of this unit is to provide you with an understanding of major theories of counselling which will assist you in developing a framework for using one or more of these approaches in your own counselling.
Objectives
On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Have an understanding of the major theories of counselling and ethics; GC; A,C
2. Develop a knowledge of specific techniques and strategies associated with counselling theories discussed in class; GC; A,C
3. Demonstrate the use of some of the techniques and strategies associated with counselling theories that have applicability to the educational contexts; GC; A,B,C
4. Provide the opportunity for supervised skills practice of counselling skills; GC; A,C
Content
This unit includes the following topics:
1. Major theories of counselling outlined including the following therapies: Psychoanalytic Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, Behaviour Therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Family Systems Therapy, and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy
2. Application of the major theories of counselling to problem situations.
3. A review of the effectiveness of strategies and techniques for specific problem situations.
4. Ethical issues in counselling.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
Various processes and approaches will be used in this course. These include video interactive group learning, practice sessions using role play, group discussions, and lectures.
Assessment
Formative assessment will be provided through feedback on initial assignment work and in electronic communication or in class as appropriate.

Description:
Video Recording of Counselling Session and Evaluative Report
A video recording of a counselling session of 40 minutes duration demonstrating the counselling techniques from one or more of the major counselling approaches. The tape will be accompanied by an evaluative report analysing the effectiveness of the counselling technique(s) used.
