This unit includes: examination of the nature and purpose of assessment; traditional and contemporary developments in the assessment of students in a range of settings; test construction and validation; record keeping and reporting, with emphasis on practical applications by practising teachers.

Rationale

In order to enhance educational outcomes for early adolescent learners, it is important to have an undertstanding of current approaches to curriculum, pedagogy and assessment in the middle years of schooling. This unit will develop your knowledge and understanding of these three key message systems in these crucial years.

Aims

The aim of this unit is to provide you with the ability to identify and evaluate middle schooling approaches to curriculum, pedagogy and assessment that are responsive to the diverse needs and interests of students in the middle phase of learning.

Objectives

On successful completion of this unit, you should be able to:

1 Design and implement engaging, flexible and challenging learning experiences for students in the middle years of schooling [QCT Standards 1, 3 & 4]
2 Design classroom environments and resources that support learning for students in the middle years of schooling [QCT Standard 7]
3 Develop curriculum that incorporates appropriate assessment and pedagogy in the middle years.. [QCT Standards 4 & 5]
4 Demonstrate acceptable standards of literacy and communicaton [QCT Standard 2]

Content

The unit includes the following topics:

- signature practices of middle schooling and their emerging implications for curriculum pedagogy and assessment;
- international, national and Queensland curriculum initiatives in the middle years of schooling;
- constructive alignment between curriculum, pedagogy and assessment;
- authentic assessment in the middle years of schooling;
- and a range of approaches to curriculum, pedagogy and assessment in the middle years;
- identification of middle years students with diverse needs;
- engaging middle years students in the classroom.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

This unit will complement work associated with the unit, SPB008 Middle Years Students and Schools and the approach to teaching and learning in both units will illustrate the principles of effective learning and teaching that underpin significant pedagogical developments in the middle years of schooling movement. This unit will be taught by integrating lectures, workshops, tutorials, possible community engagement and independent study that is further supported by web-based activities.

Assessment

Assessment includes both formative and summative components.Formative feedback will be provided during classroom discussions and in the feedback provided for assignment 1.

Description: You will be required to prepare a case study of a middle years child with a rationale that will outline and inform the professional plans required in the second assignment

Description: You will be required to write a detailed unit overview that aligns suitable approaches to curriculum development,pedagogical practices and assessment for a student in the middle phase of learning.

Risk assessment statement

Because students may undertake site visits involving schools, and community and government agencies, students are expected to abide by the health and safety requirements of any sites visited and will require a valid blue card. Other than this, no out-of-the-ordinary risks are associated with this unit. Workplace health and safety protocols in relation to computer use will apply.
