Sample subject outline - Semester 1 2013

Note: Subject outlines often change before the semester begins. Below is a sample outline.

Rationale

This project unit provides you with the opportunity to undertake a large project in the context of a 24 credit point unit. (You must undertake both INB309-1 and INB309-2 to gain credit for this project.) Being a large project it gives you the opportunity to apply your technical knowledge and skills in a realistic context to demonstrate your capability as an information technology professional. This project will give you the opportunity to develop your initiative and leadership skills. Completing the project will also enable you to appreciate the complementary nature of the course material in total, particularly the need for careful project planning and execution.

It is intended that you will undertake this unit as an elective towards the end of your degree programme to demonstrate the depth of your knowledge and skills. As a major project it requires a substantial commitment on your part to undertake the project but provides you with the opportunity to produce a substantial system that may form a significant component of your portfolio when seeking employment or may lay the foundation for further studies in an Honours or other research degree.

Aims

This unit gives you the opportunity to apply, under appropriate guidance, the knowledge and skills gained in your course to date and to execute a substantial development project.

    Approaches to Teaching and Learning

This is the continuation of the project you started in INB309-1. It may be undertaken in the same semester as INB309-1 or in the following semester. If you are taking INB309-2 in the semester following INB309-1 you are responsible for contacting your project supervisor before the end of week 1 to make arrangements to continue your project supervision for the semester.
You may work individually or in small groups of 2 or 3.

    PLEASE NOTE
The Faculty reserves the right to appoint a replacement project supervisor at any stage of the project, should the original project supervisor be unable to continue the supervision role for any reason.

    Assessment

You are assessed by your academic supervisor on the quality of the developed product, quality of product documentation, project reports and project management. You will be assessed both individually and as a group member.

You are continually assessed on your performance for the duration of the project.

All assessable material (printed reports and manuals, software, demonstrations, etc.) must be made available to the academic supervisor by the end of week 13 of the semester. All project material must be submitted in soft copy format directly to your project supervisor. Your supervisor may also require hard copy of the project material. You will need to confirm with your supervisor how many copies of material need to be submitted.

This unit is designed to cater for your needs and interests and as such your achievement is determined ultimately by your own initiative and effort.

While the specific requirements for assessment of each project are decided by the academic supervisor, it is expected that you will produce a Proposal, Project Report, Work Logs or Diaries and Working Papers (e.g. requirements analysis, design specification, test results).

You are required to demonstrate or formally present your project work to at least your project supervisor and client during week 13.Feedback will be made available through consultation and written feedback throughout the unit.
