Sample subject outline - Semester 1 2013

Note: Subject outlines often change before the semester begins. Below is a sample outline.

Rationale

This unit is in the course because it provides you with essential practical experience in teaching, and with additional skills to apply in classroom settings. This second of five field study units is a Designated Unit which has two interlinked components that give you essential skills, knowledge and insights for the teaching profession. First, it has a field experience component in your allocated field site which allows you to participate in on-site teaching and learning experiences. Second, it requires you to understand the particular language, literacy and numeracy demands of secondary education. In this second field studies unit you will also develop more advanced pedagogical skills that encourage rigorous thinking and intellectual challenge through rich modes of classroom discourse.

Designated Unit
This is a designated unit. Designated units are field experience units deemed to be critical to progress in your course. At the end of each semester, if you fail to achieve a satisfactory level of performance in a designated unit you may be eligible for a period of probation or exclusion.

Aims

The aim of this unit is to provide the opportunity and support for you to participate in the professional life of a teacher, conduct lessons and sequences of lessons under supervision, and perform other professional tasks and roles across the school day. You will also investigate the language and numeracy demands of your curricular fields, and how students' thinking and enquiry skills can be developed.

Objectives

On completion of this unit you should be able to:

1. demonstrate teaching and professional conduct appropriate to an introductory level for a preservice teacher (QCT Standards 1, 2, 3 & 7]
2. demonstrate your understanding of QCT Standards 2 and 3 through written reflections and provide evidence of attaining acceptable standards of academic, professional and personal spoken and written English language literacies relating to this unit. [QCT Standards 2 & 3]
3. demonstrate appropriate communication skills and literacy in a range of professional teams and contexts [QCT Standards 2 & 9]
4. commit to reflective practice and ongoing professional renewal [QCT Standard 10]

Content

This unit includes the following topics:

Language, literacy and numeracy across the curriculum as a teaching focus and strategies for embedding language, literacy and numeracy instruction in secondary curricula.

Pedagogical design to develop rigorous thinking, substantive conversations and intellectually challenging enquiry.

Over twenty days of field experience, the student will then build on these areas and previous curriculum studies to develop their skills in classroom practice and curriculum design under supervision.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

This unit is primarily a field study unit with the emphasis on real experience learning with attention to close reflection, constructive feedback and modeling by supervising teacher(s). Your field experiences will be supported and resourced by a series of lectures, additional reading materials with a practical focus, an online community, consultation with liaison lecturers and the site supervisor in the field.

Assessment

Assessment in the unit is both formative and summative and will be viewed in terms of the principle of 'assessment as learning'. Formative assessment is provided through verbal and online feedback and through feedback in response to teaching episodes. Summative assessment will be based on a grade of Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory. Summative assessment comprises the two items listed below. In order to pass the unit you must complete both items at a Satisfactory level.
