Learners remain central to the work of teams and must be recognised as culturally and socially diverse as well as intellectually diverse. Within these constructs the graduating teachers are required to provide a range of educational opportunities that facilitate high quality and meaningful learning engagement for all students across differing educational contexts and sectors. This unit is designed to fully immerse the pre-service teacher into the field with a view to scaffolding their repositioning as autonomous, critically reflective, inclusive professional teachers on completion.

Rationale
Field Experience is central to your preparation for the profession, and all Field Experience units are designated units i.e. students who do not achieve a grade of Satisfactory will have their progress in the course reviewed. Failure to pass a designated unit may result in exclusion from the course.
This unit is your fourth formal supervised experience in the field, and is positioned in your final year as a preservice teacher to continue the process of your induction into the education profession. In this unit, you will be guided in identifying a professional development program that best accommodates your needs as a beginning teacher. Field Experience units are designed in a graduated sequence, culminating in an internship which follows on from this fourth unit. In this unit, you continue to build your repertoire of pedagogical strategies and curriculum understandings, through the on campus component and your experience in a school setting.
Designated Unit
This is a designated unit. Designated units are field experience units deemed to be critical to progress in your course. At the end of each semester, if you fail to achieve a satisfactory level of performance in a designated unit you may be eligible for a period of probation or exclusion.
Aims
The aim of this unit is for you consider the professional issues for the beginning teacher. In addition to building your capacity to design, implement and evaluate teaching strategies, programs and assessment tasks in inclusive and critically reflective ways, you will demonstrate your understanding of ethical, legal and professional practices.
Objectives
On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Demonstrate teaching and professional conduct at a standard appropriate for a pre-service teachers [QCT Standards 1, 2, 6, 8 & 10]
2. Support personal development [QCT Standard 6] and commit to reflective practice and ongoing professional renewal (QCT Standard Ten]
3. Provide evidence of attaining acceptable standards of academic, professional and personal English language literacies relating to this unit [QCT Standard 2]
Content
This unit will cover the following topics:
- integrate and apply the professional issues and responsibilities that enable teachers to address social, cultural, political and legislative issues, in order to provide quality inclusive educational experiences for all learners.
- monitor your personal professional growth in order to identify and prioritise your learning needs as a beginning teacher.
- identify the crucial professional issues for you personally will be enhanced. You will be supported in articulating a professional platform and presenting a professional portfolio that portrays a personal/professional commitment to education, an understanding of educational policy, a personal/professional orientation to curriculum, pedagogies and assessment, and a selection of artefacts demonstrating your professional capacities.
- be guided in identifying areas for ongoing professional learning.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
This unit is taught through a series of classes on campus connected to the required text, in preparation for your Field Experience in a school setting.
Field Experience: you are assigned to the supervision of a teacher in a school, and you are supported in your development of skills and applied knowledge, through a sequence of tasks, assigned by the teacher.
Assessment
To pass this unit you are required to complete satisfactorily both assessment items. Each will be graded as Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory. Students will receive feedback while on Field Studies from their supervising teachers and others in the school. This will be formalised through reporting procedures administered by the Field Experience Office. Feedback will also be provided by tutors and lecturers relating to the written component of the unit.
