Rationale

This unit provides the capstone for your pre-service teaching degree. It focuses on your transition into the teaching profession through a three day conference held during Orientation Week (Semester 2). The unit provides you with opportunities to reflect, focus and synthesise your knowledge and course experiences as you complete your studies and prepaer to enter a teaching career.

Aims

The aim of the unit is to provide you with the opportunity to synthesise your course experiences into a demonstration of the QCT (Queensland College of Teachers) mandatory teacher professional standards.

Objectives

1. Synthesise theoretical understandings and practical experiences into a demonstration of the mandatory professional standards (QCT Standards 1 - 10).
2. Consolidate professional knowledge and establish professional networks (QCT Standards 9, 10).

Content

This unit, through presentations at the Stepping Out Conference and recommended readings, focuses on issues related to contemporary education. The unit includes the following topics: classroom management, child protection, professional codes of conduct and other mandatory requirements for teachers. Attention will also be given to differing teaching contexts, for example, teaching in rural and remote settings and online pedagogy.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

The content of this unit is presented through a scaffolded three day conference which includes a ¿market day¿ designed to provide access to employment options (such as teaching overseas), publishing companies, support systems and professional associations. Internal students attend a selection of keynote addresses, workshops and tutorials presented by experts in the field, system leaders and practising professionals. All presentations are recorded so that Internet students can participate ¿virtually¿. The assessment is practical and is based on your need to demonstrate requisite teacher professional standards for registration. Opportunities are provided for students to collaborate and share resources.

Assessment

There are two assessment items in this unit. Both directly relate to the QCT mandatory teacher professional standards with content drawn from a synthesis of your studies and experiences in field studies.
