The aim of this elective unit is to provide you with opportunities to develop an understanding of teaching and learning in history. You will investigate how learning through historical inquiry develops specific historical understandings and skills that are the foundations for historical literacy. This unit provides opportunities for you to critique how recent developments in historical education are impacting upon curriculum development and teaching approaches in Senior Ancient and/or Senior Modern History.

Rationale
This elective unit focuses on the nature of history as a discipline. You will investigate how learning through historical inquiry develops specific historical understandings and skills that are the foundations for historical literacy. This unit provides opportunities for you to critique how recent developments in historical education impact upon curriculum development and teaching approaches in Senior Ancient and/or Senior Modern History. History teaching is a complex activity, and it has been theorised extensively. In this unit, the emphasis will be on situating classroom practice within a defensible theoretical context. Throughout this unit you are encouraged to consider how effective teaching and learning can be achieved in Ancient and/or Modern History.
Aims
The aim of this unit is to introduce you to the significance of inquiry-based learning and the critical use of sources in the context of the principles of history education, pedagogical approaches and syllabus requirements for Senior Ancient and/or Senior Modern History.
Objectives
On completion of this unit, you should be able to:
1. Refine your understanding of modern principles of historical teaching and learning in the senior years of schooling [QCT Standards 2 & 3]
2. Use a range of teaching approaches which reflect these principles. [QCT Standard 1]
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the Senior Ancient and/or Modern History syllabuses and the ways in which syllabus requirements are translated in to work programs and inquiry-based depth studies. [QCT Standards 1 & 5]
4. Demonstrate the ways in which historical literacies can be developed in lesson plans [QCT Standards 1 & 2]
5. Appreciate the range of strategies which enhance history teaching and learning in the classroom, critically reflect upon them and demonstrate acceptable standards of communication and professional responsibility. [QCT Standards 2, 9 & 10]
Content
This unit will cover the following topics and contribute to your developing Professional Learning Profile.
This unit will provide you with knowledge and understanding about the ways in which principles of history education, pedagogical approaches and syllabus requirements for Senior Ancient and/or Senior Modern History can be interpreted into effective teaching and learning approaches.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
As an internal student, you will experience a range of teaching strategies such as lectures, tutorials, workshops, seminars, group work, discussions and self-directed learning, supported by the Blackboard site. As an external student/online student, you will have access to the Unit Information and Study Guide on the Blackboard site and Readings. Specific tasks and activities in the study guide and online discussions replace the challenges set for internal students.
Assessment
Assessment in the unit is both formative and summative and will be viewed in terms of the principle of 'assessment as learning'. Formative assessment is provided through verbal and online feedback, and through written comments on assignment work. The unit is assessed through two assessmenet items.

Description:
This task requires you to interpret either the Senior Ancient or Modern History syllabus and devise four (4) lesson plans related to that topic, and annotate the lessons with extracts from significant readings from the fields of historiography, curriculum and pedagogy.

Description:
This examination will assess your understanding of the principles of history education, pedagogical approaches and syllabus requirements via two unseen essay questions.
Length: 1.5 hours plus 10 minutes perusal.
