This unit is the second in a suite of three complementary units which can be undertaken in Business Education. It has been designed to expand on previous planning and teaching strategies with a major focus on assessment. Students will examine the QSA Senior Accounting and Business Organisation and Management Syllabi to understand mandatory aspects of each syllabus. This unit will prepare students for their professional role as a teacher of secondary business education subjects, in particular, Accounting and Business Organisation and Management.

Rationale
Business activity is a significant aspect of all societies providing employment and opportunities for individuals to contribute to society through the employment they undertake. Individuals engage in business activity daily at a variety of levels. An understanding of accounting and business management equips students to be informed active citizens. In this unit you will explore the QSA Senior Syllabuses for Accounting and Business Organisation and Management (BOM). There will be a major emphasis on understanding the principles of assessment and the QSA requirements in relation to these subject areas. You will also be introduced to more advanced teaching strategies, inclusive of how technology can enhance learning in Business Education.
Aims
The aim of this unit is to provide you with the opportunity to develop assessment practices that enhance learning and satisfy mandatory syllabus requirements. Throughout the unit, you are encouraged to develop a personal sense of purpose for teaching Accounting/Business Management in the secondary school.
Objectives
On completion of this unit, you should be able to:
1. implement learning opportunities that use ICTs to support learning, are socially just and inclusive, and promote higher order thinking and critical inquiry. (QCT Standard 2; QCT Standard 4)
2. design learning experience programs that draw upon pedagogical, curriculum and assessment knowledge and skills, to respond to the diverse abilities and interests of all learners. (QCT standard 1; QCT Standard 3; QCT Standard 4)
3. employ accountable and theoretically grounded processes to monitor and assess student understanding and progress, including the use of outcomes-based assessment criteria. (QCT Standard 5)
4. recognise that educators are both leaders and learners, exhibiting a commitment to work with learners, and recognising responsibilities implicit in their influence as a role model. (QCT Standard 10)
Content
This unit will cover the following topics and contribute to your developing Professional Learning Profile:
- The unit provides an introduction to the teaching of Accounting/Business Management.
- It examines the spirit and purpose of ABM education and provides an in-depth analysis of the Senior Accounting and Business Organisation and Management Syllabuses.
- Also covered are teaching methodologies, strategies and learning experiences appropriate in the ABM classroom, as well as the development of practical classroom resources.
- The syllabus is used as the basis for the development of units of work and the planning of assessment programs and the designing of assessment instruments.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
A constructivist pedagogy underpins this unit. You will participate with others in tutorials, group work, lectures (via video), and the use of self-directed learning materials supported by email and web-based Blackboard® activities.
Assessment
Assessment in the unit is both formative and summative and will be viewed in terms of the principle of 'assessment as learning'. Formative assessment is provided through verbal and online feedback, and through written comments on assignment work.
