Rationale

All individuals will be involved in a variety of business environments throughout their careers. The knowledge and skills developed through Business Communication and Technologies (BCT) will benefit students in their roles as both active citizens and employees. The integration of vocational and general education is an essential component of BCT requiring students to link all learning experiences to 'real world' situations.
This unit is the second in a suite of three complementary units which can be undertaken in the Business Education stream. It has been designed to expand on previous planning and teaching strategies with a major focus on assessment. You will examine the QSA Senior BCT Syllabus to understand mandatory aspects of the syllabus and prepare you for a professional role as a teacher of secondary business education subjects, in particular, BCT.

Aims

The aim of this unit is to provide you with the opportunity to develop programs and assessment practices that connect with the 'real world' and which satisfy mandatory syllabus requirements. You will understand the need for continuous improvement and practice in developing assessment tasks that integrate vocational and general education.

Objectives

On completion of this unit, you should be able to:

1. Demonstrate personal and professional understanding of the concepts, skills, processes and values of Business Communications and Technologies in senior secondary education (QCT Standard 1);
2. Design intellectually challenging learning experiences (QCT Standard 3);
3. Develop techniques for identifying and developing criteria for assessment in the arts, and consider the characteristics, uses, advantages and limitations of different assessment techniques (QCT Standard 5)

Content

This unit will cover the following topics and contribute to your developing Professional Learning Profile:

- principles of unit development and assessment and equity relating to a variety of business subjects,
- critiquing assessment plans and assessment instruments,
- developing assessment programs and assessment instruments and competency based assessment.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Through lectures, tutorials and seminars, you will employ a problem based inquiry approach. Students will engage with readings and syllabus documents as well as examples of assessment items.

Assessment

Assessment in the unit is both formative and summative and will be viewed in terms of the principle of 'assessment as learning'. Formative assessment is provided through verbal and online feedback, and through written comments on assignment work.
