Total Quality Management (TQM) has evolved beyond its roots in statistics and the quality control function. Today, many observes consider it to be a framework for "excellent" management. The dominant themes are: a data-based approach to problem solving: a strong emphasis on organizational and behavioral considerations: a customer-oriented market- sensitive approach to designing and delivering both products and services: and finally, a desire for continual improvement. TQM practice is a pathway to the achievement of world class competitiveness.

Rationale
Total Quality Management (TQM) has evolved beyond its roots in statistics and the quality control function. Today, many consider it to be a framework for "excellent" management. The dominant themes are: a data-based approach to problem solving; a strong emphasis on organisational and behavioural considerations; a customer-oriented market-sensitive approach to designing and delivering both products and services; and finally, a desire and a system approach for continual improvement. TQM practice is a pathway to the achievement of world class competitiveness.
Aims
The aim of this unit is:
To provide you with an understanding of the underlying philosophy, theory and practice of TQM
To acquaint you with the tools required to effectively manage total quality
To develop the skills you require to effectively manage total quality, through team exercises.
Objectives
On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Apply TQM analysis tools and methods for effective implementation
2. Develop TQM planning and audit skills
3. Formulate and present reports on continuous quality improvement plans
4. Produce gap analysis, benchmarking, cause and effect analysis and evaluation of measures for quality improvement.
Content
The focus of this unit will be on: Quality as a competitive stategy; the evolution of quality management; ISO9000 and elements of quality systems; continual improvements (basic tools, statistical process control, advanced tools); customer measurements; managing change; total employee participation; benchmarking and the six sigma approach.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
Teaching and learning will include lectures, case studies, group discussions and project, class exercises and question and answer sessions. Although, the main part of the unit material will be delivered through lectures, some material will be delivered via Blackboard; as flexible learning material.
Assessment
You will be assessed on, both, team and individual work. Assessment will involve oral and written forms.Instant feedback will be provided to students for oral assessment components. A tutorial session will be organised to provide feedback to written assessment.

Description:

You are required to form into groups of 3 or 4 and prepare a formal report on a critical total quality management task provided during lectures and in the study guide. The team report details are provided in the study guide. Further guidance willl be provided as required during lectures or through Blackboard.

Description:
Written Assignment
Refer to Rao et al (1997), pages 477-484 as your guide. A key element of a quality system is for people and processes to be able to effectively and efficiently work in and contribute to teams. Prepare a short report (less than 2000 words) on the modern concept and the best team characteristics to deliver a quality product and services. Starting with a review of recent literature and using your class team as an example, address the following:
Key issues for a successful team project
What are team strengths, weakness and what improvements need to be made
How well do you think you performed as a team member
What needs to be improved
Suggest an optimal process for working in teams
