Sample subject outline - Semester 2 2013

Note: Subject outlines often change before the semester begins. Below is a sample outline.

Rationale

Services represent a major component of the cost of construction and require a high level of planning supported by adequate technical understanding. This unit provides the technical understanding required to read plans, supervise and coordinate building engineering services in a building.

Aims

This unit aims to provide you with the skills needed to interpret building services drawings and supervise the installation of services in a building.

Objectives

Upon completion of this unit you should be able to:

1. Interpret building services drawings
2. Explain how building components, systems and building services interact and interface
3. Co-ordinate building services to minimise service clashes
4. Understand and apply basic estimating
5. Recognise and consider the different elements in building services and their relationship in pre-construction, construction and post-construction stages

Content

This unit covers the following:

  • Introductory building service and system design

  • Basic understanding of the costs of engineering services, including

  • Building maintenance procedures

  • Introduction to 'whole-of-life' costs

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Teaching Mode: 2 hours per week.
Lecture: 2 hours

Teaching and learning strategies are designed to encourage you to fulfil the aims and learning objectives of this unit. The delivery of this unit is based around 13 lectures and tutorials. Students will get the most out of these lectures and tutorials if tasks are completed prior to attending them when asked to do so.

This unit is supported by the QUT UDB215 Blackboard site that provides access to unit information including teaching and assessment materials.

Assessment

QUT's Assessment Policy is located at MOPP C/5.1.

Overview of Assessment:
The assessment will comprise formative assessment (feedback in class from the lecturer and through group discussions) and summative assessment (assignments and an end of year exam).Students will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester which may include:
- Informal: worked example, verbal feedback in lecture
- Formal: in writing, such as criteria sheets, written comments
- Direct: to individual students, in written form or in consultation
- Indirect: to the whole class, in lectures, and via unit Blackboard

Assessment name: Report
Description: You will be required to work in a group and individually to generate a detailed report on the selected case-study project, addressing specified aspects of the building services. The report will contain a case discussion covering a wide-range of building services (including electrical & mechanical systems).
Relates to objectives: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Weight: 40%
Internal or external: Internal
Group or individual: Group with Individual Component
Due date: Week 6

Assessment name: Examination (written)
Description: Final examination including problem solving, short answer questions and/or drawing interpretations.
Relates to objectives: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Weight: 60%
Internal or external: Internal
Group or individual: Individual
Due date: End of Semester

Academic Honesty

QUT is committed to maintaining high academic standards to protect the value of its qualifications.
