Assignment-based project orientated group work where you design and document a commercial development from a project management perspective considering constructability drawing on your skills in estimating; planning; scheduling; site organisation; environmental planning & sustainable urban development. Focus on special construction techniques; reuse of buildings and building materials; durability of materials, minimisation and disposal of construction waste; construction practice; planning and use of appropriate forms of construction for various building sizes and types; community negotiations; statutory responsibilities including access for people with a disability .

Rationale
This unit builds upon UDB110 Residential Construction and Engineering, UDB112 Professional Studies 1, and UDB210 Commercial Construction and Engineering to further develop your professional competencies. You will also be expected to apply to your project knowledge and experience gained in UDB100 Urban Development and Sustainability.
Aims
The aim of this unit is to provide you with an opportunity to experience the type of decisions met in professional practice when constructing a low rise project and to investigate and apply solutions. This unit will enhance your capacity to act independently and develop confidence in your own judgement in developing a project.
Objectives
By the completion of this unit you should be able to demonstrate the following discipline specific capabilities:
1. Understand the economic, managerial, technical and statutory aspects of the design and planning of a low rise development.
2 Apply the principles of sustainable design and decision making in all stages of a project.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of practical detailing, effective construction techniques and realistic scheduling in carrying out a sustainable project.
4. Manage team dynamics and workload when planning and undertaking a project.
Content
This unit covers the following: constructability; estimating; planning; scheduling techniques and site organisation; environmental issues and sustainable urban development; special construction techniques; construction materials; construction practice; planning and use of appropriate forms of construction for various building sizes and types; community negotiations including strategies and models to obtain results from public consultation processes; project management and commercial decision making; and statutory responsibilities including access for people with a disability.

Lectures: 2 hours plus one hour individual consultations per week

This unit is based on a single project in which you are required to prepare a substantial part of the design of a low rise residential and commercial building. You are encouraged to make use of all information sources, both within and outside the University, and to communicate with the community, professionals, practitioners, government agencies, etc.

Aspects that my be considered include site procurement considerations (ecological constraints, sustainability, environmental issues, materials handling, concept drawings, working drawings, structural details, infrastructure, development approval and BCA requirements and energy efficiency.

Description:
To manage construction of the low rise building developed in Assessment Item 1, develop a partial project management plan covering:
- organizational structure, responsibilities and accountabilities of the construction team,
- a work breakdown structure incorporating all major deliverables,
- a project schedule (in the form of a Gantt chart) identifying all major activities, associated resources and dependencies,
- a risk management plan primarily focussed on major safety and environmental risks,
- a quality management plan, and
- a stakeholder management plan including community engagement and a final submission.
