Sample subject outline - Semester 2 2013

Note: Subject outlines often change before the semester begins. Below is a sample outline.

Rationale

This unit builds on the first year, first semester units Introducing Professional Learning, Residential Construction and Engineering and Construction Engineering Materials. It draws heavily on the skills and knowledge that you acquired in those units. It links with other units you'll be covering in your degree studies including Measurement, Contract Administration and Programming and Scheduling. Finally the unit provides knowledge which will be utilised particularly in Building Services Engineering and helps develop capabilities which will be developed further in the next Professional Studies unit.

Aims

The aim of this unit is to provide you with an understanding of the role of various construction industry professionals within a residential housing project, including the various technical activities undertaken, overall project management, understanding of the community's expectations and to help you to learn how to develop synergy between the many conflicting aspects of projects in order to develop satisfactory solutions.

Objectives

By the completion of this unit you should be able to:

1. Interpret and utilise levels to Australian Height Datum (AHD) standards, prepare contours to set out of a residential building.
2. Understand how building components, systems and services interact with each other;
3. Prepare construction documentation and model of project;
4. Prepare and plan on and off-site activities
5. Produce a cost plan of a residential project.

Content

This unit covers the following:
Contour plans, architectural drawings, building services design, structural design, specification of construction materials, construction detailing, building approval process, time scheduling, Cost planning, contract administration.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Lectures: 2 hrs/pw
Tutorial/workshops: 3 hrs/pw

This unit relies extensively on problem-based learning related to a case study and student initiated private study. Each component of the work is introduced with a brief lecture on the general approach to that component of the work. This in turn is followed up with a tutorial/ workshop (normally 3 hours/week) in which you are able to consult with the lecturer. Based on the introductory lectures (normally 2 hours/week), you are expected to work independently of the lecturers to research and complete the assessment required for each component
